πŸŽ‰πŸ“– Book Week is almost here!

At Surat State School, we are looking forward to celebrating the magic of books in so many ways. From our Somerset Storyfest excursion to St George to our colourful Dress-Up Parade, there will be plenty of opportunities for students to immerse themselves in this year's theme, "Symphony of Stories."

Stories inspire, connect, and transport us to new worlds, and we can't wait to celebrate them together.

Who else is excited? πŸ“šβœ¨

A Special Visit from Uncle Ross

Today, our Prep students were privileged to welcome Uncle Ross, who shared the beautiful story The Adventure Walk on Country.

Through storytelling, students learnt Mandandanji language words, including mayan (waterhole) and bandaar (kangaroo). Uncle Ross also brought along a guduu (turtle) from the river and echidna quills, giving students a hands-on opportunity to explore and connect with the natural world.

As he read the story, Uncle Ross shared his deep knowledge of the local area, helping students understand the importance of caring for Country and showing respect for the land, animals, waterways, and culture.

It was a wonderful and enriching experience that strengthened our students' connection to Mandandanji culture and deepened their understanding of Country.

A heartfelt thank you to Uncle Ross for sharing his knowledge, culture, and time with our students. Your dedication to educating and inspiring our young learners is truly appreciated. πŸ’›πŸŒΏπŸ’

Today, our Prep students enjoyed a special excursion to the Balonne River, walking along the Surat River Walk on Mandandanji Country. Students used their observation skills to identify the features of the area, discuss why places are special, and explore how we can care for Country. This learning experience will support our English unit, where students will create a spoken retell about their excursion.
