When we hear a kid translate for their parents, we're often so impressed that we overlook the heavy responsibility it can place on the child. Having to translate in adult situations such as medical appointments, parent teacher interviews, or rental applications can result in children needing to navigate confronting discussions we usually try to shelter them from.

Did you have to translate for your parents when you were a kid? In what situations? How did it make you feel?

We're overjoyed to receive these lovely bags filled with school materials from a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

These silent superheroes enable us to continue our mission of giving kids from refugee and migrant backgrounds have what they need to thrive.

Thank you for your incredible kindness, we can't wait to put these into the backpacks of RMCC kids!

As a child, did you ever wish you had a role model, someone who looks like you, someone to look up to and confide in?

This is what we want to give RMCC kids through our tailored, weekly mentoring programs. Having mentors who provide guidance, inspiration and support has a significant impact on these kids and helps them successfully navigate challenges and achieve their goals.

This is, however, not the only reason we use the mentor approach for our programs! To find out more, check out our latest blog post at https://rmccaustralia.org.au/why-we-choose-the-mentor-approach/.

When someone shares their experience of racism with you, it's an opportunity for empathy, understanding, and standing in solidarity.

Let the person know they're not alone, offer support and express your commitment to combating racism. Ask questions to better understand their unique perspective while being mindful not to burden them with the responsibility of educating you.

By actively confronting racism and fostering an environment of compassion, we contribute to a more inclusive society where everyone feels heard, valued, and respected.

Imagine a world where the only labels we have are on our favourite foods, not on people.

Imagine a world where kindness knows no colour, where acceptance is our common language.

By committing to eliminating racism and embracing diversity, we can make the world a much better place for everyone, regardless of how they look and where they come from.

Harmony Week is a time to come together, break down barriers, and build bridges of friendship and respect. Why not celebrate it in a fun, meaningful way this year?

These seven challenges will give you an opportunity to listen to each other's stories, learn from our differences, and embrace the common humanity that unites us all.

This year, once again, let us be reminded that diversity is not just something to be tolerated but celebrated. By working with and appreciating each other, we can make every week a Harmony Week.

Ramadan Mubarak!🌙✨

Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide and is marked by fasting, prayer, and reflection. This is a sacred journey of self-discipline, spiritual growth, and community solidarity, and the most important month on the Islamic calendar.

During Ramadan, you might frequently see and hear some (or all) of the terms below. What other terms would you add to the list?

08/03/2024

🤚 Never have I ever had to leave my home because it wasn't safe.

🤚 Never have I ever spoken more than one language.

🤚 Never have I ever celebrated a holiday in a different way than I do now.

🤚 Never have I ever had to learn about a new culture and way of life.

Raise your hand if you've done all these!

Kids from refugee and migrant backgrounds often have unique and challenging experiences due to the circumstances of their displacement and resettlement. At RMCC, we recognize the diverse experiences and needs of these children and provide them with the support and resources they need to feel belong and thrive in their new home.

Being an ally is like being a cheerleader for your friends, but instead of just cheering them on, you're actively helping to break down barriers and create a more inclusive environment. You cheer the loudest when your friends succeed and call out unfairness and discrimination when you see it.

Allyship is about actively supporting and advocating for marginalised groups. It's an ongoing process that requires self-reflection, humility, and a commitment to growth and action.

By becoming an RMCC mentor, you can be a true ally for kids from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Find out how to join our mentor squad at https://rmccaustralia.org.au/volunteer/.

Navigating career choices as an immigrant kid can be particularly challenging when met with disapproval from their parents. What they often face is a dual struggle: striving to integrate into a new culture while also attempting to pursue their career aspirations. The pressure to conform to their parents' expectations can create feelings of isolation and frustration, and potentially causes family conflict.

However, it is important to remember what often considered as parents' lack of understanding often comes from a place of love. Having made great sacrifices to establish a new life in a foreign country, they want their kids to pursue conventional career choices as a way to ensure stability and financial security. When you have to do everything you can to survive, "dreams" and "ambitions" become a luxury.

Bridging this generational gap often requires open communication, empathy, and a willingness to navigate the delicate balance between cultural expectations and individual aspirations.

Diversity is not merely acknowledging and tolerating differences. It's about celebrating and embracing the richness that arises from each individual's unique qualities, perspectives, and experiences.

By recognising and appreciating the distinct contributions of people from various backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life, we can tap into a wealth of ideas, creativity, and resilience and create a more inclusive, welcoming society.
