🧠✨ What is Heavy Work and Why is it So Powerful for Children? ✨🧠
Heavy work refers to activities that involve pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, or squeezing, all of which activate the proprioceptive system, the part of the body that helps children understand where their body is in space.
💪 These types of activities are regulating, calming and organising for the nervous system, perfect for children experiencing big emotions, sensory overwhelm, or difficulty focusing.
🌟 Benefits of Heavy Work:
• Helps children feel calm and in control
• Builds body awareness and coordination
• Supports emotional regulation
• Increases attention and focus
• Creates opportunities for independence and confidence
5 Easy Heavy Work Activities at Home or in Childcare:
1. Pushing wheelbarrows or loaded prams
2. Carrying buckets of water or sand
3. Carrying their own bags to and from school
4. Vacuuming or sweeping the floor
5. Scrubbing tables, walls or outdoor play equipment
Heavy work can be naturally woven into everyday routines, creating meaningful moments that support children’s regulation and wellbeing.
Tip: Use heavy work before transitions, after active play, or when a child is feeling unsettled.
Big feelings need big tools. Heavy work is one of them.

It’s bittersweet to share that we will be closing Little Mountain Folk at the end of this term.
This journey has been filled with joy, learning, and deep connections, and we are beyond grateful for every child, family, and supporter who has been a part of it 🥰🥹
While we will no longer be running from our home space, we have taken these changes as an opportunity to pivot and expand on what we’ve been creating here and what we are sooooo passionate about. When one door closes, another door opens!
Although we have heavy hearts in saying goodbye to our beautiful families, we are also excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to share it with you in the near future.
Stay tuned for future announcements as we embark on our next project. Thank you for being part of our story!
With so much love and gratitude
💚🌿
