In amongst all our learning, we also found some time to ask the kids what a “second home” means to them and how we could make our space better reflect that. Together, we sketched, brainstormed and shared ideas and from those conversations (and a day's work), a fresh, purposeful space was born!

We know our environment is so much more than what surrounds us. It plays an important role in creating safety, security, belonging and connection, while encouraging children to explore, make choices, build relationships and simply be themselves.

With our refreshed environment now in place, we have been able to explore what is possible when our spaces are more flexible and responsive to children’s play. Rather than seeing our room as something that needs to look the same every afternoon, we can now adapt our environment to support children’s interests, engagement and play flow. Resources can move, spaces can change and different areas can be opened up or packed away depending on what the children need.

We know the best OSHC environments are not static. They respond to the children who use them. They change, adapt and grow alongside their interests, needs and ideas. This means that yes, you will notice we will now use our space a little differently, somedays it may even look like we aren't using it at all, but be assured we absolutely are, we're just simply exploring possibilities!

This was a special task that we are proud to have accomplished and perhaps the best part of it all was seeing the children’s ideas come to life. We love the awesome visions they share with us, but even more, we love what this process teaches them: that their voices matter, their ideas are valued and they have the power to influence the space they call their second home.

What a busy few weeks it has been for our team!

Our winter camp saw us gather (and FREEZE!) at the beautiful Lake Moogerah, where we had some invaluable PD with our very own Outsider Wonders, Angus and Izzie and special guest Daniel Burton from Educated by Nature. We learnt some valuable leadership insights, play flow knowledge and Daniel led us through some hands on fun outdoors where we built an epic seesaw with our fellow hinterland colleagues. It wasn’t a competition or anything, but we did still finish first, just saying!

A few weeks later, we headed into the city and joined a crowd of passionate play advocates at the 2026 Planning for Play Conference, and what a day it was! The knowledge, advocacy and powerful words shared throughout the day were plentiful and left us feeling motivated, inspired and empowered. We came away with an even deeper understanding of the true value of play and the important role we have in ensuring children have the time, space and freedom to experience meaningful play.

What an action packed few weeks of learning, connection and inspiration! A huge thanks to our team (and fabulous organisers) for giving up your weekends to learn, grow and create a better service together. We can’t wait to take everything we’ve learned and put it all into practice!

One simple photo. One powerful story.

A muddy puddle. An old tyre. Two pairs of shoes and socks left to dry. To most people, it might not look like much. To us at it captures almost everything we stand for.

It represents children who are free to explore, play, get dirty, take healthy risks and connect with the natural world. It shows resilience, curiosity, adventure and the confidence that grows when young people are given the space to challenge themselves. It also reflects what we offer as a service, not perfectly curated experiences, but real ones. The kind where shoes get muddy, socks get soaked, laughter is loud, and learning happens naturally through play, discovery and connection.

Every puddle jumped in, every obstacle climbed over, every muddy footprint left behind is an opportunity for growth. These moments build independence, problem-solving skills, social connections and a genuine love of the outdoors. We believe childhood should be experienced, not observed from the sidelines. We believe in nature as a teacher, adventure as a pathway to learning, and that sometimes the best days are the ones that end with wet socks and dirty shoes.

Because when children are presented with free play they discover who they truly are 💚

Not long to go now and we are super excited! We have some epic things coming up! This vacation care, we have really emphasised captured ideas from families and children and we can't wait to share the journey with the children as these ideas are brought to life (yes, even the messy ones).

If you haven't already, jump online and book your spots! Don't forget, you don't have to be enrolled at Beerburrum state school to attend so please, share with friends, family and community!

Can't wait to see you all soon!
