THE MIRROR, NOT THE PATCH

Unfortunately, in Taekwon-Do, many senior practitioners blame the art and their Master for failures both inside and outside the dojang.

Years of physical training have not always developed the resilience, discipline, and character demonstrated by the early Korean masters, who dedicated much of their lives to the development of Taekwon-Do.

Too often, practitioners allow personal issues and outside distractions to weaken their martial arts training.

The noise of everyday life should not dominate your mind, especially when you enter the dojang.

When problems arise, many look for someone or something to blame, why they are no longer training consistently, why their black belts have lost motivation, or why no new white belts are joining.

Instead of searching for excuses, they should take responsibility for the condition of their school and for their own development of mind, body, and spirit.

A simple change of club patch, organisation, or affiliation does not change who you are.

The answer is not found in a different patch, a different association, a different dobok, or a different Master.

The answer is found in the MIRROR. 👊

Real change comes through honest self-examination, commitment, leadership, and consistent training.

The art has not failed you, nor has your Master.

Before blaming Taekwon-Do or your Master, look in the MIRROR and accept responsibility.

Flashback Friday 👊

Original photos on the left and right taken in the late 70s under the Rhee Taekwon-Do banner.

The flying side kick of then Chief Instructor (now Grandmaster Cheah) was captured at his full-time dojang in Townsville, known as “The City Cutting” because of the massive rocks that lined and separated the street.

Another shot shows me and my brother practicing our own flying side kicks, most weekends were spent training outdoors, pushing ourselves as students.

The final photo brings it full circle, training with my Taekwon-Do brother, Boosabum Rick, refining the flying side kick.

From student to master, the flying side kick has always been a symbol of discipline, progression, and respect. Truly grateful for these moments and the journey.

Taekwon,
GMJM

Taekwon-Do at 71 — A Reflection 👊

In all those years, one truth has remained clear to me, a Master should never lose sight of the floor.

Too often, people become lost in administration , believing it defines their role, or gives them a sense of belonging or importance.

But that is not where the heart of Taekwon-Do lives.

My Journey as a Taekwon-Do Master

As a Master in ITF Taekwon-Do, nothing inspires me more than seeing students walk into the dojang for the very first time , wearing their first dobok, eyes wide with excitement and curiosity.

From that first class to the moment they tie on their black belt, I have the honour of guiding them through every step of their journey.

Along the way, I come to know their families — the parents and loved ones who encourage, support, and celebrate each milestone.

Together, we create more than just martial artists; we build a community grounded in respect, discipline, and spirit.

Watching students grow in confidence and character reminds me every day why I teach. Taekwon-Do is not only about technique, it’s about shaping lives.

Yet, once you step off the dojang floor and into administration, the focus can easily drift. It can become about politics, power, and managing problems. While administration has its place, it should never overshadow the true purpose of our art.

The essence of Taekwon-Do lives on the floor, in the sound of kihaps, in disciplined training, and in the spirit of students striving to be their best. That is where I find calm, peace, and purpose.

The Tenets of Taekwon-Do. Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit , remind us that our mission is far greater than titles or positions. It is about building a more peaceful world, not only through our movements, but through our example.

For me, true mastery is not found behind a desk. It is found in the dojang , guiding the next generation to live the art of Taekwon-Do with heart, honour, and humility.

Let the administration sit where it belongs ,at the top, supporting the structure , but never replacing the soul of what we do on the floor.

Taekwon,

Jamie Moore
