Today is National Sorry Day.

We acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generation and the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.

On this day in 1997, the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament and detailed the national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.

By acknowledging the past and moving forward together, we can learn from one another and pay our respects.

In Forest School we learn about fire, the complexity, the elements to build, maintain and extinguish safely, and above all, respecting the power and danger of fire. Fire bonds us, fire unites us through stories and above all - connection with those that join us in campfire yarning.

Our favourite past time is reaching heights with no adults. We perch up here like birds, calling out to our friends, testing out strength, our agility, our boundaries. We are always assessing if we ‘feel safe’, or maybe try another time when I feel ready. It’s not about pushing, it’s about finding our confidence within ourselves, not others. This is Forest School.

Climbing trees. In the beginning this can be very intimidating, it means relying on ourselves. It can be overwhelming. But when we try and only do to where we feel safe, in our own time we will push that boundary, little by little. For now, she tells me this must be how the birds feel. She is cautious, she is a little afraid, but as she practices balancing, testing herself, she is already achieving more than she thought when she woke up this morning....

One of us was used to climbing up the tree hut, lifting himself down from the roof onto the roof of this second building's roof. The others all wanted to but weren't ready. We always talk about feeling ready, feeling comfortable to do things, we encourage others but don't persuade or force them. We talk about how we feel when we partake in risky play....
