Every year on 10 September, communities, organisations and governments across Australia and around the globe come together to mark World Su***de Prevention Day.
It is a time to reflect, connect, and continue our shared commitment to preventing su***de and promoting hope.๐Ÿ’™

Led by the International Association for Su***de Prevention (IASP), this yearโ€™s theme, โ€˜Changing the Narrative on Su***deโ€™, challenges us to transform how we think and talk about su***de.
Itโ€™s a call to shift from silence and stigma to openness, empathy and action, to ensure people in distress feel heard, supported, and connected. Together, we can help create a future where more lives are saved and more stories are shared.

These are not just numbers. Behind every number is a person, a friend, a colleague, a community with a story to share.

People respond in different ways to witnessing a su***de and it is important to know that whatever you're feeling is likely a normal response to an incredibly difficult situation.

StandBy has developed a free resource that provides information and support for people who may have:

โ€ข Witnessed a su***de death
โ€ข Arrived on the scene of a su***de or were almost involved in the scene of a su***de
โ€ข Heard/read a detailed account of a su***de

The resource explains that feelings such as shock, fear, confusion, numbness, and detachment are normal and that you may experience intense and sometimes overwhelming emotions as you process what has happened.

World Su***de Prevention Day, held annually on September 10, is an important opportunity for LGBTIQA+ communities and our supporters to unite in action toward preventing su***de. At Switchboard, we know the power of community spaces to come together in the face of loss and generate hope through action.

Ceremony and ritual are woven into the fabric of LGBTIQA+ histories. As part of this gathering, a memorial ceremony will be held where we tie ribbons on the Remembering Rainbow, inviting people to say the names of LGBTQIA+ folks they are remembering.

There will also be an opportunity to hear from LGBTIQA+ lived experience speakers and the Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities, Joe Ball.

We will have volunteer-guided craft activities available on the day, including embroidering / sewing the names of LGBTIQA+ people who have died by su***de onto ribbons for the Remembering Rainbow.

You may wish to attend simply to be in a LGBTIQA+ space, drink tea, have nibbles and connect with community. We welcome you to use this space as you need.

If you are unable to make it and would like to tie a ribbon, please write to us at [email protected] and we will tie one on for you and send you a photo.

๐Ÿ’œ Today is Wear It Purple Day! ๐Ÿ’œ
This year's theme, Colours of Courage, celebrates the many ways LGBTQIA+SB young people, allies and communities show courage every day.

Courage isn't only about big moments. It can be speaking up, creating change, living authentically, asking for support, standing beside someone, or choosing pride and hope when being yourself doesn't always feel easy.

Let's celebrate diversity, inclusion, acceptance and belonging, and continue creating spaces where everyone feels safe to be themselves.
