A 16-year-old client tells you she has been self-harming. You assess her as having capacity. She is completely clear with you: "if you tell my mother, I won't come back, and I won't talk to anyone else either".

You know the clause. The APS Code of Ethics permits disclosure where there is "an immediate and specified risk of harm to an identifiable person or persons that can be averted only by disclosing information."

Three conditions and all of them have to be met, and sitting in that room, you're really not sure they do but you have a young person sitting in front of you who you know is seriously harming themselves.

Knowing the codes and knowing what to do with them are different skills — and the second one is mostly built by reasoning out loud with other psychologists. Early career practitioners often don't get much chance to do that.

Ethics in Practice is a four-week discussion group for psychologists who want to work through the ethical dilemmas that are nuanced and tricky.

Four Mondays: 19 and 26 October, 2 and 9 November. 5–6pm AEDT, online.

Week 1 — Confidentiality and consent
Week 2 — Boundaries and multiple relationships
Week 3 — Conflicts of interest
Week 4 — Competence and self-care

Each session works one substantial case, anchored in the Psychology Board's Code of conduct (in effect since 1 December 2025) and the APS Code of Ethics. Every case has more than one defensible answer because these groups are designed to be a discussion forum, not a lecture.

Facilitated by Dr Catherine Hart, Clinical Psychologist, Board-approved Supervisor, APS Supervisor of the Year (2024) with over 25 years in the mental health field.

Supervision shapes every psychologist working in Australia today, and yet many of us have never had a conversation about whether it's actually being done well.

At AAPi 2026, I'm tackling that head-on in "Three Years In: Are We Setting Supervisors Up to Succeed?", part of the "What We're Not Talking About" stream on Wednesday 21 October.

Here's what you'll walk away with:

→ A clear picture of what the Code of Conduct now actually requires of supervision, and why you or your supervisor may not be fully across it yet
→ An honest look at what's changing, and what isn't, as the psychology training pathway heads toward major reform
→ A practical framework for what a supervision agreement should include, whether you're currently supervising, being supervised, or both
→ A free, ready-to-use supervision contract template to take away and start using immediately

This isn't a session about pointing fingers. It's about a system that's asking a lot of supervisors, often without giving them the structure to do it well, and what we can do about that together.
