Are you hesitant about letting your people know your value framework, in full, in writing as your Leadership Covenant?
Is it because you want a Leadership Covenant to be ‘right’? and you’re thinking…
- How we conceive value will change.
- How we contribute value will change.
- How we count value will change.
Yes, on all counts. These three dimensions of value constantly rub against one another wherever reality is present and emergence is expected. (...everyday.)
You as a leader evolve with the relationships among these three dimensions.
Your people look to you to clarify their ambiguity and uncertainty in a world where reality brings many surprises.
The idea of a Leadership Covenant is to put a stake in the ground that you move when appropriate, to fit better with changing circumstances. The idea is to give your people somewhere to anchor themselves as they learn how the ‘tides’ are shifting and how they need to move with them.
If you’re not explicit about how you conceive, contribute and count value, will people mistake interest for intent, discussion for direction, and then infer their version of you and your direction? ...when you could remove that ambiguity.
Make no mistake - there’s no right answer, but you’ve hired good people who will place higher value in you when they know what you value.
Make more mistakes - once you’re anchored on value, as there’s fun in learning to work artfully together making big things happen, even when reality bites.
