We make good families better At FamilyLab we make good families better.

We operate as a "laboratory" where professionals, educators, parents and children work together to find new ways to transform emotional love and commitment into loving behavior. We work with parents who are "constructively insecure" when faced with relationship conflicts and challenges. We believe there are better ways to raise and educate children than authoritarian force or democratic tricks. We embrace relationships based on equal dignity, authenticity, integrity and self-responsibility.

Understanding Anger in Children and Young People.
Sydney Ashfield: Wednesday, March 18th, 2015 7.30pm - 9.00pm
The Infants’ Home, 17 Henry St, Ashfield. All are welcome.

This FamilyLab seminar deals with an issue which is challenging for most parents: Anger!

To understand anger we must acknowledge that children who learn to repress their anger will become violent, and those who learn to mange their anger will not. We also need to accept that conflict is important for our children’s learning. Our role as adults is to see anger as an invitation. Do our children have a sense of belonging and do they feel they are of value to us?

Discipline doesn't solve any problems - it just postpones them. Why do we often meet anger with anger? What is it about conflicts that we find uncomfortable? Should parents stop yelling? What do we do when our child is bitten or bites others? How do we deal with their anger, tantrums, throwing, biting, hitting...? Six W’s give us some of the answers to anger!

This is an interactive and inspirational workshop. There will be plenty of everyday examples and time for discussion.

Cost: $25.00. To register please contact Alicia Paciocco on 9799-4844 or email:

"There is only one reason why children and young people lie..." Thank you for all the interesting suggestions. As many of you noted:

Children and young people lie because they sense that their parents cannot handle the truth. They think like this: “My family cannot handle the truth about my behavior. They get too angry and too sad. A crisis between us is inevitable. I better lie to avoid this.” When children and young people constantly lie, it is often part of a bigger problem. Those lying are trying to say: “I don’t feel like a member of this family any longer and I don’t care about their rules.” Such a powerful reaction from a child is always based on a painful past.

Parents must stop inflating their children’s egos.

People who have a well developed sense of self-worth are not concerned with praise. If I think I am good only when others tell me so then something is obviously completely wrong. That is what ultimately happens to many of those youths who are continually praised by their parents and teachers. To them, all this praise is proof they are talented so they come to believe they are absolutely fantastic. Then they start a career and get a job which lasts all of three weeks. They will be shell-shocked.

There is nothing wrong with being good, or a world champion sprinter, chess player or whatever. That is wonderful, but things go seriously wrong when we start believing that this is what life is all about. Suddenly, we face emptiness and are thrown into a terrible personal crisis. This easily leads to depression and drug abuse.

The “see-vitamin” must be taken at home.

Reality is that most children spend a substantial amount of their important years in care. This is not necessarily detrimental to them but unfortunately some of the vitamins they need are only available at home. One of the most important ones is the “see-vitamin”. We need to be able to “see” our children just as they are - instead of focusing on their ability to adjust and fit in with the systems and the world around them.

When children are exposed to ambitious, targeted and focused upbringing things will inevitably go wrong. Try to pull at the grass in an effort to make it grow faster. Every child knows that the opposite will happen when they are being pulled. The roots become weak and they slowly lose their ability to absorb nutrition from their surroundings. As parents we are better off showing patience and letting our children set the pace. Watch them grow and enjoy what they become - but do not forget to water them and make sure they get some sunlight.

Children demand a lot of attention but luckily the don’t need as much as they demand. The more they experience that they are seen the less attention they require.
