Summer Hill Martial Arts & Self Defence

Remember to teach your Kids about "stranger danger" , personal protection and fundamental self defence - this was a recent post by a Mother shared on the community FB:

"My 12 year old daughter told us something concerning this week that we wanted to share with the Summer Hill community to help keep our children safe.
Whilst our daughter was walking home alone from the Flour Mill recently, a silver car, similar shape and size to a Mazda CX5, pulled up alongside her on Wellesley Street near Edward St.
A man and woman were in the car. The woman had white, blonde hair and the man had a bushy, black beard.

The woman asked my daughter “would you like us to drive you home?” And then asked “where are your parents?”. My daughter rejected their offer and then the woman became more insistent about her getting into the car so they could take her home. At this point my daughter got scared and ran off towards home.

We are sharing here for two reasons. Firstly, because as parents we had prepared our daughter for this possibility and yet my daughter only felt the need to tell us about this after a “stranger danger” talk at school last week. What we had neglected to prepare her for was that in the moment there is confusion and uncertainty but gut instinct is always right.

Secondly, this information might help you prepare your child for walking on their own in our neighbourhood and keep a cautious eye out for anything unusual.

Our daughter is ok. I worry about her walking alone, but I won’t stop her because that is life limiting. I am sad she experienced this in the neighbourhood where she has felt safe all her 12 years.

But, we are so happy she shared this news with her teacher, and then they both shared it with us. We are also very grateful nothing happened other than her feeling very scared. She is now much better prepared for any future possibilities.
