When the Flag competition was called by Prime Minister Edmond Barton, with Government Gazette 27 31st May 1901 the designers had to come up with two designs One the Blue Ensign for military and civil use and the other for the Merchant Marine, which is the Red Ensign.
The Merchant Navy also celebrate their Merchant Navy Day on the 3rd September each year with the National Flags birthday. Merchant Navy Day commemorates the civilian seamen who served on merchant ships during both World Wars. Lest We Forget! Those and their families. who paid the ultimate Sacrifice! The merchant navy played a crucial role in supplying Allied home fronts and military forces. The date marks the anniversary of the first attack on an allied merchant ship, on 3 September 1939.

Sunday 27th April, the Day after ANZAC Day, I went to Kings Park. I drove over the Narrows Bridge from the Southern Suburbs, when I noticed there were NO Australian National Blue Ensign Flags on the 14 Mounts Bay Road Flag Poles. As I drove in front of our WA Parliament Building to Kings Park Road, there were NO ANF Blue Ensign Flags on the Flag Poles at the Entry to Kings Park. When I arrived at the First World War Memorial Monuments footpath looking out to the City and the Swan River, I noticed there was NO ANF Blue Ensign on the huge Flag Pole at the foreshore, between the Narrows Bridge and the City??
What is going on The City of Perth? Why were there No National Flags flying for the ANZAC Day week, either side of ANZAC Day 25th April 2026??

Dear Editor The West Australian 16th Dec 25.
Mr. Alston's sketch on the inside cover has it so right, showing Mr. Albanese in the Miry Clay, of his faltering Prime Minister-ship, as depicted with the two Australian National Flags either side of him at this troubling time. We are all One Peoples, under ONE Australian National Flag!
