Many people make New Year's resolutions to change, and that is a good thing, but what makes a lot of people fail is that we fail to plan the change. The same is similar in organisations. Change happens all the time and many people can be resistant to change, sick of change, or just don't believe it will make a difference.
Here is a little introduction to Kurt Lewin's Change Model that may help you implement any New Year's resolutions in your team:
1. Unfreeze: This stage involves preparing the team/organisation for change by creating awareness and understanding of the need for change. It often involves helping people understand their existing mindsets, attitudes, and structures that may cause them to resist the change, and then creating a plan for how the change will occur.
The unfreezing stage helps create a sense of urgency and readiness for the upcoming changes. It allows people to prepare mentally for a period of transition and to realise that the old way of woking is about to change.
2. Change: In this stage, the actual change is implemented. New processes, systems, or structures are introduced, and employees undergo the necessary adjustments. As the image suggests, this phase can be a bit messy. The change phase is often marked by uncertainty and ambiguity as individuals adapt to the new ways of working. Communication, support, and training are crucial during this stage to facilitate a smooth transition.
3. Refreeze: Once the change has been implemented, this stage involves stabilising the new state and reinforcing the changes. The goal is to solidify the new behaviours, processes, or structures, making them the new norm. It takes time for people to form new habits, so during the refreeze phase acknowledge that things are new, and that people may be uncomfortable and that is ok.
A positive refreeze stage helps prevent a relapse into old habits and ensures that the changes become ingrained in the organization's culture.
The key is to not change things again until the new way of working has become habitual. Change takes a great deal of mental energy and we need time to adjust, so keeping things frozen embeds the new way of working.

Great leaders draw out the best in the people they lead. Coaching is one way to help someone grow. We love this quote from John Russell the MD of Harley Davidson in Europe!
PS: Doesn't the new electric Harley look pretty cool too?
