Our Sustainability, Environment & Community Program, led by Miss Taylor, is an important part of life here at Stellar ELK. Held fortnightly on Tuesdays, this learning program supports children to develop a strong sense of connection with and contribution to their world, while nurturing curiosity, agency and a genuine respect for the environment and our wider community. ππ
Our Kindergarten children worked together to pot a beautiful, native Australian Lilly Pilly plant. As they explored the process, the experience became so much more than simply planting a tree. It created opportunities for children to wonder, question, problem solve, collaborate and learn alongside one another. Four watering cans quickly became a lesson in sustainability and thoughtful use of resources! Miss Taylor reminded us, βWe are all learning togetherβ. When one of our Kindy friends wondered if plants could talk, a beautiful conversation followed about how plants may not speak with words, but that we can still care for them by speaking kindly and positively as we watch them grow. π±π§
Our Stellar ELK Educators are always learning alongside the children, with Miss Eunice encouraging Miss Taylor with a reassuring, βBe brave, Miss Taylor!β as they carefully worked together to remove the Lilly Pilly from its pot. These are the moments where meaningful learning happens ...children are encouraged to see themselves as capable and active contributors, developing respect for living things and understanding that their everyday actions can make a difference.
Through our Sustainability, Environment & Community Program, children and Educators explore ways to reduce, reuse, recycle and repurpose, care for nature and wildlife, use resources thoughtfully and participate in initiatives that support our local and wider community. At Stellar ELK, sustainability is not something we simply teach, It is something we live and embed in our everyday practice. ππ
