Desert Whip Snake (Demansia cyanochasma), Laverton area, Western Australia. We were aware that this whip snake was widely distributed geographically between the eastern Yellow-faced Whip Snake (D. psammophis) and Western Reticulated Whip Snake (D. reticulata) for years now causing considerable taxonomic confusion. Before cameras, illustrators provided a valuable contribution to historical accounts, and this was also the case when visually documenting animals. This is Plate 8 from The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Erebus and Terror (1839-1843). The reptile section was written by 2 authors, George R. Gray (pp. 1-8, 1845) and Albert Günther (pp. 9-19, 1875). Günther mentions the original reptile drawings were done by Mr Ford.

I have included photos of the respective species portrayed in the drawings. The captured likeness is comparable to my camera.

These posters are just a guide based on images of the regional species, but colour variation in some make it difficult. One truly needs individual posters to display the variable nature of some like tiger, dugite and gwardar.

It was a mulga snake that got him - Off Track - ABC Radio National. Ann Jones the producer of this programme contacted me a couple of weeks ago and did this story which aired at 05.30 this morning. Although most consider me a little strange, she did a great job of it.
