It’s been a long week of auditions, and all our students have really put on a show for our auditions panel. Well done to everybody who took the time and effort to pull out all the stops for an incredible week of auditions. Deliberations are now being made, with final decisions announced soon.

Our senior students’ latest production 1915: The Untold Story at Stirling Community Theatre honours a heartbreaking truth many families faced.

Across Australia, mothers and fathers waved their young sons off to war. In their hearts, alongside pride, was a quiet, terrible knowledge: they might be sending their children to die. Not every young man was lost but for those who returned, life was often worse. Wounded in body and spirit, many came home changed, struggling to find their place in a world that expected them to simply move on.

This is the story our 15–18 year old cast is telling. It is not easy to watch. It is not meant to be. It is real, respectful, and more important now than ever.

Two shows remain:

These photos features Ben Proeve, one of our co-directors on 1915: The Untold Story, in his infamous role as the Dame in Snow White and the Many Dwarfs.

Ben’s love of pantomime, his brilliant comic timing and his enthusiasm for all the wild fun of the genre have inspired generations of HYT students.

Our current production is Ben’s final show with HYT, and he will be very much missed.

Thank you, Ben, for your talent as a performer and for your shining presence as a tutor and director – your warmth, humour and passion for theatre have left a lasting mark.

We know you will continue to light up the stage and bring joy to audiences for many years to come.

This gem from the HYT archives shows Harri as Esther, the mother in Seven Little Australians, with Sam (now part of our Assistant Tutor team) as the father, the “Captain”, and a very young Audrey Vincent as “General”, the youngest of their seven children.

Audrey joined HYT as a young performer and has grown into a talented and dedicated actor over the years.

She now graduates at the end of 1915: The Untold Story, playing the role of Sarah Green.

Audrey, you will be missed on our stage and in our rehearsal room.

Alexandrina Seager founded the original Cheer Up Hut after her three sons went to war. How do we know this, we hear you ask?

Because her great‑great‑granddaughter recently connected with us through our current production, 1915: The Untold Story.

Through the Cheer Up Hut, Alexandrina rallied support from across South Australia, gathering donations of food from communities all over the state to care for departing and returning soldiers.

In 1915, she also established Violet Day to commemorate the landing at Gallipoli. If you’ve ever walked along North Terrace, you may have passed a plaque honouring Alexandrina’s contribution — her family kindly sent us a copy to share with everyone involved in the show.

It is also believed that the Cheer Up Hut later evolved into what became the RSL. If anyone can confirm this or has more information about the history of the Cheer Up Hut and Alexandrina Seager, we’d love to hear from you.

Our senior students have staged something truly powerful. 1915: The Untold Story at Stirling Community Theatre

HYT’s latest production is not a jolly, happy show and it isn’t meant to be. It’s a real, honest, and balanced story about the impact of war: on those left behind at home, and on everyone when those who went finally return. In a time when these lessons matter more than ever, stories like this must be heard. If we don’t want history to repeat, we must listen.

Performed by our cast of 15–18 year olds, this production has been a profound education in an often-forgotten part of our country’s history. These young artists have grappled with complex themes, embodied real stories, and helped ensure that vital voices are not silenced.

The war didn’t just happen “over there”. It happened here in the Adelaide Hills too.

Right in our own community, families sent their young men away, knowing many might never come home. And when soldiers passed through Adelaide on their way to training, to the front, or back again they were met by the Cheer-Up Hut.

Founded in 1914 by local women like Alexandrine Seager, the Cheer-Up Society turned a simple tent into a lifeline: hot meals, safe accommodation, concerts, and a place where exhausted and wounded men could be treated with dignity. In four years during the First World War alone, volunteers served around 200,000 servicemen. The work was carried almost entirely by women, who gave their time, energy, and hearts to care for “the boys” as if they were their own.

This is part of the history our senior students are honouring on stage in 1915: The Untold Story. Their production reminds us that war changed everyone: those who left, those who stayed, and those who returned. The Cheer-Up Hut was one of the few places where that pain was seen, acknowledged, and gently held.
