Congratulations to Emeritus Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg from UQ's School of the Environment who has been awarded the Prestigious Darwin Medal at the International Coral Reef Society Conference in Auckland, New Zealand. 🏅

The Coral Reef Rescue Project was inspired by Professor Hoegh-Guldberg's landmark 2018 research, known as the 50 Reefs study, which highlighted the need to protect climate-resilient coral reef regions most likely to withstand climate change and support reef recovery worldwide. 🪸🐠

A well-deserved recognition of decades of leadership in coral reef science, climate research, and global conservation.

UQ-CoralWatch takes reef science to the outback 🪸🌵

The Outback to Ocean tour bought together CoralWatch staff, youth ambassadors, and guest scientist Professor Gregory Webb from the School of the Environment with the aim of raising awareness of reef conservation in regional communities.

Together, the team delivered 10 community events across 7 locations, engaging more than 555 people from Winton to Woppa Great Keppel Island highlighting the practical actions individuals can take to help protect reefs into the future.

Outback communities were able to connect to the conversations about coral reefs and ocean conservation through coral skeletons, fossils, microscopes, virtual and, augmented reality experiences.

A big thanks to Woorabinda State School, Barcaldine Prep-12 State School, Winton communities, Longreach communities, Rockhampton, Livingstone Shire Council and CUC RAPAD Central West Queensland.

🌱Paton Turner is a UQ Bachelor of Agribusiness/Agricultural Science student whose passion for agriculture began in high school and was nurtured through UQ Skills.

🐮Hugh Reiser completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours, majoring in Animal Science at UQ and grew up on a cattle property near Eidsvold, developing a strong interest in the agricultural industry from an early age.

🐴Dr Anne Beasley is a teaching and research academic at the University of Queensland’s School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability at UQ Gatton and has spent her career working in the field of parasitology with interests in both ruminants and horses.

The UQ Science Ambassador Program is 25. 🎉

Since 2001, more than 8,000 Year 11 students from over 430 high schools including rural, regional, and remote communities have proudly carried the title of UQ Science Ambassador.

Today, the program is stronger than ever, with more than 1,590 active Ambassadors across 190+ schools raising the profile of science, leading National Science Week activities, and inspiring the next generation of scientific thinkers.

A very special acknowledgement goes to two schools who have been with us from the very beginning — St Rita's College and Cannon Hill Anglican College🎖️

Over 25 years, St Rita's has produced 118 Ambassadors and Cannon Hill 85 — an incredible achievement and a testament to the dedication of their Year 11 science, mathematics, and geography teachers and students.

Thank you to everyone who have made this program what it is and here's to the next 25 years of the UQ Science Ambassador Program.

From birdsong to galaxies: unleashing the potential of citizen science. 🐦💫

An international collaboration of 16 organisations used surveys and group discussions to identify key challenges, opportunities and best practices in citizen science projects.

Ecologist Dr Christopher Lawson from 's School of the Environment said citizen science was often seen as a nice-to-have engagement activity, but the study showed it was capable of being scaled up to deliver stronger environmental and social outcomes.

“Citizen science brings together curiosity, community and technology like smartphones so people from all walks of life can to contribute to scientific discoveries and solutions,” Dr Lawson said.

Dr Jack Nunn led the study for Science for All. The work was funded by the Australian Citizen Science Association with support from the Australian Academy of Science.

That's a wrap on FEAST 2026!

Future Experiences in Agriculture, Science and Technology (FEAST) is a 4-day residential program that gives high school students a taste of the exciting careers waiting for them in agriculture, animal science, plant science and food industries.

This year, we welcomed 77 enthusiastic year 10–12 students from across Queensland and interstate to UQ Gatton for four unforgettable days of hands-on workshops, facility tours, social activities and a taste of campus life.

By providing travel subsidies, students from regional and remote areas including Rockhampton, Biloela, Tannum Sands, Monto, Nanango, Clifton, Toowoomba and Darling Downs were able to join us and experience university life firsthand.

A massive thank you to the incredible UQ students, AGFS, SVS and everyone behind the scenes. Your passion, support and generosity with your knowledge helped create something truly inspiring for every student who stepped onto campus.

And to our amazing FEASTers — thank you for your curiosity, energy and willingness to dive right in. We loved having you, and we hope to see many of you back at UQ soon! 💚🐄🌱
