🪸 🤿 Most Master's students learn from data someone else collected. At Heron Island Research Station on the southern Great Barrier Reef, Faye Diederiks and David E. Carrasco Rivera got to collect their own.

Faye drew on 20 years of seafloor survey data to ask whether Heron Reef is growing, shrinking, or holding steady. David tested whether satellite imagery could track reef health at a scale field surveys can't reach – work that led to a published paper.

Both describe days shaped by the tides rather than the clock, and a research community that, as Faye puts it, becomes part of your journey well beyond the field trip itself.

🐨 We're highlighting the research helping to protect koalas for generations to come for Save the Koala Month.

Professor Joerg Henning is investigating how disease, habitat loss and climate change affect koala populations. His work has helped identify key threats to koala survival, develop KoalaBase to monitor koala health across Queensland, and create new ways to assess stress in koalas without disturbing them.

What a fantastic weekend at the Quandamooka Festival 2026 on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). ☀️🐳🏝️

The UQ Moreton Bay Research Station and Study Centre (MBRS) spent the weekend connecting with visitors, sharing research, and celebrating the unique environment, culture and stories of Quandamooka Sea Country.

It was great to see so many visitors stop by our stall, with children especially excited to get hands-on and interact with marine life in the touch tank. 🐚

The team also delivered a presentation on the conservation of threatened species, including White's Seahorse. It was inspiring to see such strong community interest in science, research and marine conservation.

A special thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with our researchers, ask questions, and learn more about the work being undertaken at MBRS.

A big shout out to the organisers of the festival for a wonderfully successful event. We can't wait to be back next year! 💜

's Professor Jo Blanchfield is on the cutting edge, helping bring these natural compounds into modern medicine. Her research explores chemicals in plants and fungi used in traditional medical practices and bush foods in Australia and around the world. These can then be translated into amazing new medicinal compounds.
