Learn jazz by playing jazz. We are a music school and creative community specialising in teaching jazz and improvised music.

Structured jazz programs in Sydney including weekly bands, private lessons and music camps for musicians from beginner to pre-professional level. We provide fair and equitable access for all our students to high levels of musical achievement through structured and pedagogically principled knowledge-building as well as immersion in a vibrant community of musicians. Small ensembles for students, weekly rehearsals. Members learn the unique skills for playing in an improvising jazz band, reinforced through weekly practice sessions. Rehearsals include learning music, structured coaching in jazz improvisation, and jamming for fun. Many high-achieving alumni have used JWA combos as a pathway to success (Sydney Conservatorium entry, National Jazz Award-winners, Freedman Jazz Fellows, leading young Australian jazz players, and more). Jazz Camps
A much-loved and important part of our yearly program are our jazz camps. The famous JWA Summer Jazz Camp is a 5-day residential camp early each January. Held in Sydney and open to students from all over Australia and overseas, it provides an immersive and motivational experience second to none! About us
Jazz Workshop Australia was co-founded in 2007 by jazz educator Dr Saul Richardson, and producer & music education organiser Karen Richards. Based in the Sydney lower north shore suburb of St Leonards. Rehearsals and lessons are in our purpose-built studio at 89 Chandos St, St Leonards.

Congratulations to Chiara Minotto — composer, saxophonist, band leader, and Jazz Workshop Australia & Sydney Youth Jazz Orchestra graduate — on winning the 2026 DownBeat Student Music Award for Best Undergraduate Student Composition for Large Ensemble.

Chiara is currently studying jazz composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This is her first international award, but surely not her last!
