In an outstanding achievement, our School has finished 2nd overall across the ACS Athletics Carnival this week, despite being the smallest school in the association.

A huge congratulations to our Boys’ Athletics team on winning the Overall Boys Championship.

Our Girls’ team also impressed, finishing 4th overall and continuing their strong improvement.

A special congratulations to Cooper B (11H), who broke the ACS 200m record with an incredible time of 22.37 seconds, becoming the only athlete at the carnival to set a new ACS record.

These results are a testament to the commitment and school spirit shown by our athletes, coaches and families throughout the season.

Congratulations to everyone involved on an outstanding ACS Athletics campaign! 👌

Kenise Tong leads data at St Michael’s 📊 - the person quietly powering the systems that help teachers, students, and families thrive. Her impact spans teaching, learning, enrolments, and operations, but it’s the human instinct she brings to all of it that sets her apart.

Ask her what the job is really about, and she won’t say data. She’ll say people.

Her story is one of resilience, cultural identity and a deep belief that belonging is something schools must actively create not just hope for. And having lived it herself, she knows exactly what it takes.

What does life after school look like? Last Wednesday night, our Years 9–12 students got to find out — straight from the people living it.

Presentations from Ambulance Victoria, AIFS, MedEntry and Melbourne Victory Football Club offered honest, real-world perspectives.

Our alumni panel reminded students just how many directions a St Michael’s education can take you.

This year’s panellists included:
🎨 Chris Watts (2010) — Archibald Prize finalist
🫀 Nicki Carter (2011) — Cardiologist, Royal Children’s Hospital
🚒 Zak Bahramis (2007) — Firefighter, Fire Rescue Victoria
💼 Jack Austin (2010) — Founder of Canary B
📸 Joanna Margiolis (2014) — Graphic Designer & Photographer, Netball Australia
🩺 Sienna Di Natale (2020) — Doctor of Medicine candidate, University of Melbourne

Evenings like this remind us that careers are rarely linear — and that the most valuable thing we can give our students is exposure to the breadth of what’s possible.

A huge thank you to our Careers Counsellor Belinda Geddes for bringing such a diverse and wonderful evening together. 💙

What if a test wasn’t the end of learning — but the beginning? 📝

At St Michael’s, our Mathematics faculty is quietly reimagining what assessment can look like.

When a student receives a low score, they aren’t simply handed a mark and moved on. They identify their gaps, engage deeply with the mathematics, and demonstrate their understanding in a structured reassessment. The review process carries more weight than the test itself — because what matters isn’t performance under pressure on a given day, but the sustained work of understanding.

Over time, something shifts. Students who arrived in Year 7 saying “I’m dumb at maths” begin to find a different relationship with the subject — and with themselves as learners.

Because when assessment works, students don’t just receive a judgement. They leave knowing what to do next — and believing they’re the ones who can do it.

We sat down with Mathematics teacher Dean Carlton to hear about this assessment change and the thinking behind it.
