Thought of the Week

We live in a world where everyone wants to be an influencer.

But perhaps the real question we should be asking is: Are we influencing our environment, or are we allowing our environment to influence us?

The Torah describes Noach as a Tzaddik in his generation.

He lived in a world filled with corruption and negativity, yet he refused to allow his surroundings to define who he was. He remained righteous, faithful to his values and committed to doing what was right, despite the influences around him.

There is a powerful lesson here for each of us.

We cannot always choose the environment we find ourselves in, but we can always choose how we respond to it.

The Rebbe taught us that it is not enough to simply protect ourselves from the darkness around us. Our responsibility is to go out and bring light to others.

Our mission is not just to avoid being negatively influenced, but to become a positive influence.

In our homes, workplaces, communities and wherever life takes us, we have the opportunity to lift others, inspire goodness and make the world a little brighter.

Don’t just be a product of your environment. Be the reason your environment becomes better.

Good Shabbos! Looking forward to seeing you all in Shul!

Thought of the Week

This past Sunday, on Simchat Torah, we completed the entire Torah, reading the final words of V’Zot HaBerachah, and immediately began again with the opening words of Bereish*t.

The very last letter of the Torah is a ל (Lamed), from the word ישראל (Yisrael).

The very first letter of the Torah is a ב (Beis), from the word בראשית (Bereish*t).

Put these two letters together, and they spell לב – LEV – HEART.

The Torah is not simply a book of laws, history or wisdom. The Torah is the heart of who we are. It is what gives us life, direction, purpose and meaning.

A heart doesn’t live for itself. Its entire purpose is to pump life and energy to every part of the body. It doesn’t distinguish between the important organs and the less important ones. Every part matters.

So too with the Torah.

If the Torah is truly our heart, it must influence not only how we connect with Hashem, but also how we connect with one another.

To be more understanding. More patient. Less judgmental. More willing to listen, to forgive and to see the good in others.

As we begin reading the Torah once again this Shabbas Bereish*t, let’s make this a year of more Torah, more kindness, more understanding and, above all, more heart.

Because the Torah isn’t just something we learn, it’s something we live.

Good Shabbas! Looking forward to seeing you all in Shul!

Thought of the Week — One More Day

Last year, in my Thought of the Week, I shared the beautiful meaning behind Shemini Atzeret.

After all the days of Sukkot, Hashem says to us:
“Stay with Me one more day. Don’t go home just yet.”

I ended that message with a prayer: Please G-d, may all our children come home, referring to the hostages so that they too could spend the Chag with their families.

And, as we all remember, just hours later, the remaining living hostages came home.

This year, as we celebrate Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, we also mark three years since the horrors of October 7.

We remember those we lost and stand with those who still carry unimaginable pain. But we also take this opportunity to look upwards and say thank You for the open miracles we have witnessed, for the strength and resilience of Am Yisrael, and for the blessings we sometimes take for granted.

We pray that Hashem bring an end to the pain, bring comfort and healing to our people, protect Israel and Jews everywhere, and bless us with true and lasting peace.

Please join us over the next 48 hours.

Come to Shule.
Come dance.
Come celebrate.
Come remember.
Come say thank You.

After everything our people have been through, there can be no more powerful response than to hold the Torah close and dance with it, with pride, joy and unity.

Thought of the Day
All year we try to create security strong walls, comfortable homes and certainty about tomorrow.

Then Sukkot comes and says: “Leave your permanent home and dwell in a temporary one.”

The Sukkah represents Emunah recognising that our ultimate security doesn’t come from the walls we build, but from Hashem.

That’s why Sukkot is called Zman Simchateinu, the time of our joy.

Real joy comes when we realise we don’t have to control everything and trust hashem.

For seven days, we step into Hashem’s Sukkah and learn the beautiful lesson of letting go and trusting.

Warm regards,
Rabbi Moshe & Dina
