The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) is a training and research organisation formed by the amalgamation of the Caribbean Meteorological Institute (CMI) and Caribbean Operational Hydrological Institute (COHI). The Caribbean Meteorological Institute was established in 1967 by the member states of the Caribbean Meteorological Organisation (CMO) while the Caribbean Operational

Hydrological Institute (COHI) was established in 1982. Even though the two Institutes were amalgamated since the mid 1980's, the organisation continued to be known as the Caribbean Meteorological Institute up until September 1999 when the name was officially changed to reflect the dual role of the Institute. Responsibility for the operation of the Institute rests with the sixteen Commonwealth Governments which comprise the CMO.

🌀 In case you missed it: CIMH’s 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook – Early August Update provides the latest forecast for Atlantic hurricane activity and highlights the factors expected to influence the remainder of the 2026 hurricane season.

🌊 Here are three key highlights:
🔹 12 named storms are forecast for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
🔹 5 hurricanes, including 2 major hurricanes, are forecast for the full season.
🔹 El Niño conditions are expected to contribute to reduced hurricane activity, particularly after August, while also contributing to higher temperatures and an increased likelihood of heat waves across the Caribbean.

The Outlook also examines the influence of ocean and atmospheric conditions on hurricane activity and provides important context for understanding the remainder of the season.

🌱 Crops also suffer in extreme heat, leading to lower yields and higher losses for farmers.
Indicators of heat stress in plants include:
• Leaf scorching & wilting
• Premature flowering or seed development
• Stunted growth & increased respiration
• Greater vulnerability to disease and pests

Precautions farmers can take:
• Ensure consistent water supply
• Use mulch to retain soil moisture
• Optimize spacing and maximize planting density
• Maintain healthy soil with organic matter and drainage
• Plant drought- and heat-tolerant varieties
• Use shade nets, windbreaks, or cover crops
• Monitor weather forecasts & soil temperatures
• Adjust planting/harvest times to avoid peak heat

Antigua and Barbuda is now the third Caribbean Meteorological Organization Member State to join CIMH’s Regional Marine Observation Network!

Last week, CIMH, in collaboration with the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service, completed the deployment of three marine observing systems, including at Green Island, southwest of Barbuda.

The systems feature Sofar Ocean Spotter Buoys, which will provide near real-time observations of wave, swell and other key ocean conditions.

🌊 For Antigua and Barbuda, the new observations will support improved marine forecasts, early warnings and decision-making.

🌎 For the Caribbean, the data will contribute to CIMH’s Regional Marine Forecast Support Centre and help improve regional marine forecast models, strengthening forecasting and resilience to marine and coastal hazards.

The deployment forms part of CIMH’s Strengthening Institutional Capacity for a Resilient Caribbean Coastal and Marine Environment (RCCAME) Project, an initiative supported by the Caribbean Development Bank under the Caribbean Action for Resilience Enhancement (CARE) Programme. Financing is provided by the EU to Barbados, Eastern Caribbean States, the OECS, Caricom & Cariforum through the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) Intra-ACP Disaster Risk Reduction Programme (DRRP).

With the addition of Antigua and Barbuda, the regional network has now expanded from the Turks and Caicos Islands, to Belize, and now Antigua and Barbuda. 🌊🌎

CIMH and the The University of the West Indies Climate Studies Group Mona are urging governments, businesses, farmers and households across the Caribbean to strengthen preparedness as forecasts point to hotter and drier conditions in the months ahead.

The evolving conditions could have significant implications for water resources, agriculture and food security, health, energy, tourism and other climate-sensitive sectors, with dry conditions potentially extending into 2027.

Now is the time to use available climate information to assess risks, make informed decisions and strengthen preparedness.

From its beginnings as a regional institution supporting meteorological and hydrological services, CIMH has grown into a centre of excellence providing training, research, technical support, and a broad range of weather, water, climate, marine, environmental, and geospatial services.

🌧️ Flooding is one of the biggest risks during the wet season, but you can take steps to protect your family and property:
✅ Develop a family emergency plan
✅ Ensure your insurance covers flood damage
✅ Store clean water in case of contamination
✅ Clean drains regularly
✅ Use sandbags, barriers & sealants to block water intrusion
✅ Raise structures, electrical systems & utilities above flood levels

A little preparation goes a long way. Stay safe this wet season!
