Baldessin Studio Created in 2001 in memory of artist George Baldessin. A studio for all forms of printmaking. www.baldessinpress.com.au

This was originally the studio of artist George Baldessin (1939-1978), who built this bluestone studio in the early 1970s out of entirely recycled materials. It is a very special creative place, steeped in history, art, and the "community of artists". Baldessin is an iconic figure for printmakers and artists, and his studio now welcomes creative people of all kinds to spend time learning, working on a project of their own, or just getting in touch with their creative self. It has been two weeks since Sydney Contemporary
Wow, we are still recovering, what a week!

We are incredibly proud to have shared the work of George Baldessin alongside 53 talented printmakers to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand, admired the work and supported the Studio - it was wonderful to share our love of printmaking with you!

We would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to each of the 53 artists involved for donating their work to ensure our not-for-profit organisation can continue its work.

We would also like to thank all the volunteers and staff who helped prepare, transport and share the work in Sydney, this event would not have been possible without you.

To our fellow Works on Paper friends, colleagues and stand neighbours, thank you for a great week.

And of course, a huge thank you to all the team at Sydney Contemporary and Akky van Ogtrop who put on another fantastic fair making us feel so welcome and cared for.

If you missed us in Sydney the 25th Anniversary Print Collection, alongside a beautiful selection of George Baldessin’s silver prints, will be shown at Australian Galleries Melbourne from Nov 10-28th, 2026. Please join us for the Opening Night on Tuesday, November 10th, more details to come!

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

As a studio run by artists, for artists, we understand the thrill and joy of pulling a print never fades.

We have delighted in sharing our knowledge and love of printmaking with the thousands of workshop participants and artists who have passed through our doors over the last 25 years and seen tens of thousands of prints pulled off our presses,

With a year-long program of workshops, masterclasses and residencies, there is something for everyone.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS AT SYDNEY CONTEMPORARY

This year is a momentous one for our studio marking
25 years as a not-for-profit, open access printmaking studio inspiring innovative printmaking.

To celebrate this milestone we have embarked on a very special project, The Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection. We’ve invited 53 members of our community to create an editionable print as both a celebration and as a fundraiser enabling us to share our love of printmaking into the future.

The collection launches September 3rd at Sydney Contemporary and online. Stay tuned to find out more!

A special ‘silver’ 25th anniversary exhibition will follow in Melbourne at Australian Galleries Nov 10-28, alongside a selection of George Baldessin’s incredible silver prints.

We can’t wait to share this exquisite collection with you. It has been a privilege to bring this project together over the last six months and we are indebted to the generosity of all our artists.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting an enthusiastic group of COLLARTS photography students in the studio for a day of photogravure.

The group explored the possibilities of the photopolymer photogravure process including plate making, inking and a range of printing techniques with some fantastic results!

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

We are delighted to once again partner with Nillumbik Shire Council to host the
2026 Nillumbik Artist in Residence at Baldessin Studio.

This residency is open to printmakers and visual artists incorporating printmaking processes into their practice and to those who have a connection to Nillumbik Shire.

Last year’s recipient, Brendan•Huntley, represented by Tolarno Galleries, reflected on his residency:

”I was able to create a series of monotypes with the guidance of the expert staff on site and the world class printing equipment.. The residency greatly broadened my understanding of printmaking and I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity.”

Applications close on the 31st of August 2026.

We are very pleased to announce Sophie Westerman as the recipient of the 2026 State Library Victoria 2026 Tate Adams Memorial Fellowship. 

Sophie’s project, ‘What Is Left’, will draw on the State Library’s collection of sketchbooks, photo albums and autograph books to develop a new artist book exploring the personal archive, memory and preservation.

We’d like to thank everyone who applied for this year’s fellowship – the quality and breadth of proposals made for a genuinely difficult selection process – and extend heartfelt thanks to the generous donors whose support makes these programs possible.
