Hymba Yumba, (Bidjara Language) a Community Listening and Learning Place, is an innovative education and community building initiative. Our Prep – Year 12 school is grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Students are encouraged to achieve academic, sporting and creative excellence in a culturally affirming, dynamic environment. In the tradition of their peoples, students are e

ncouraged to show Respect for Self, Elders, Family, Community and Country. Students build strong and proud Indigenous identities in a nurturing and challenging school environment. The contribution of knowledge and wisdom by the Elders, Families and Community are at the core of the education process at Hymba Yumba. Our students are actively engaged in education and they achieve solid academic outcomes. Their confidence and self-esteem is growing and their pride in Culture is driving them forward. Hymba Yumba provides seamless education and training from Prep to Year 12, Vocational Education and Training (all ages), health and wellbeing services, an Elders Bora Place and University pathways. The knowledge and wisdom that Elders, Families and Young People bring to the school community is valued and respected.

Open Day is coming up at HYIS! We are very excited to present our awesome school on Friday 4th September from 9am-12pm. There'll be principal-led tours, classroom showcases and food offered all morning, plus Q&A with key HYIS staff.

Feeling a little jealous of our Year 12s and their deadly outfits?

Well, Shakespeare did warn us about the “green-eyed monster”!

Our Year 12 English jarjum are bringing Shakespeare's Othello to life as they prepare for their external exams. They are exploring its characters, themes and powerful language while building their confidence in essay writing and responses.

We’re so proud of the way our jarjum are challenging themselves, developing their skills and embracing their learning!

**WIN FREE BRONCOS TICKETS THIS FRIDAY!**

We’re thrilled to welcome the Brisbane Broncos Community Team to Hymba Yumba this Friday, along with special guests Sam Thaiday and Olivia Coe-Fox!

Jarjum will enjoy the morning alongside Sam reading us his new book, a special performance from Olivia, a Q&A, photos and plenty of exciting surprises!

AND THERE’S MORE!

Come to school tomorrow and go into the draw to win tickets, generously donated by the Broncos, to this Saturday night’s game! With 50 tickets up for grabs, 10 lucky jarjum will each win 5 tickets!

There will also be more prizes and lucky door treats to be won throughout the day, so you’ll have to be here to find out what’s in store!

Our Prep and Year 5 primary jarjum were very lucky to meet a few of the AFLW Brisbane Lions team members this week! Prep were joined by Ally Anderson as they showed off their drawing skills while Year 5 had Dakota Davidson join them for their Elders reading time.

This recognition celebrates the incredible work of our entire school community in creating meaningful opportunities for our jarjum and empowering lifelong learning. Every day, our staff, jarjum, families and partners work together to build strong futures through education, culture and connection.

As we celebrate 15 years of Hymba Yumba Independent School, we’re excited to welcome prospective families to our Open Morning on Friday 4 September, from 9:00am–12:00pm.

Come along and experience our school community for yourself, with Principal and school leader-led tours, real classroom showcases, opportunities to meet our staff, food from our canteen and a chance to ask questions about life at Hymba Yumba.

It’s a relaxed opportunity to explore our school, discover our approach to learning and see what makes Hymba Yumba such a special place for our jarjum and families.
