Oral health messages for children are very similar for adults and older adults with natural teeth - brushing teeth and gums with a soft toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

For people living in care homes or for those receiving care at home, this should be completed twice per day for 365 days of the year.

This at-home care supports in-clinic treatment twice per year.

Failure to provide twice-daily at-home care is neglect and a form of elder abuse. Residents, family members and advocates should report dental neglect.

This week is National Science Week 2026 - a time to reflect on the need for evidence-based oral health care.

As health practitioners, we should only be advising on oral health strategies that have evidence as to their effectiveness. For best-practice dental advice and recommendations, people need to consult a registered dental practitioner.

Many dental academics, dental and oral health students, and their family members were disappointed to hear that the expansion of the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) program to support students studying 10 frontline allied health disciplines in areas of national skills shortage did not include dental and oral health students.

No dental in Medicare
No dental in the NDIS
No dental in residential aged care
No dental in home care

What has oral health got to do with elder abuse? Heaps!

The inability of persons to access twice-daily oral health care and affordable dental treatment can last a lifetime.

However, for older persons, the combination of systemic medical conditions, inflammation, immune responses and multiple prescriptions can result in oral health infections deteriorating rapidly.

Health workers and personal carers should be aware of the dental histories and changing oral health care needs of older Australians in terms of assessment, prevention, care plans, intervention and referral pathways.

Failure or neglect to respond to their oral health needs is a form of elder abuse.

It is always good to learn something new about oral health care for people living in residential aged care homes. Dr Warren Shnider, a Special Needs specialist dentist in Melbourne, spoke last night at a webinar by the OHAA Oral Health Association of Australia through the Aged Care SIG about Aged Care & Oral Health. He mentioned that a headlamp was recommended for good vision for personal care assistants.

You can't see what you can't see. So, let there be light!

Lights on mobile phones and the use of the Smilo.ai app also utilise lights for better vision in the mouth.

I also recommend lifting the top lip upwards and lowering the bottom lip downwards to see the front teeth and givgiva clearly. Contrary to popular assumptions, the front or anterior teeth are usually dirtier than the posterior premolars and molars as these are often missed when a carer is cleaning the mouth (teeth, dentures, gums and tongue) of a person in their care.

It is important to integrate oral health into primary care. Integration of electronic health records is the goal. Whilst in aged care this week with , it was good to speak with two general medical practitioners, a physiotherapist, a nurse practitioner, and a chaplain. We also met the chaplaincly support dog. And we interacted with the registered nurses, enrolled nurses, personal care assistants, lifestyle co-ordinators, catering staff, and cleaners. We can achieve so much more and better when we work together for the benefit of the residents.
