The biggest and brightest supermoon of the year will be visible on the evening of Wednesday, November 5. 🌕

This is the second supermoon of 2025 and follows October’s “harvest moon”, which kicked off a series of supermoons.

A third supermoon, known as the “cold moon” is due to rise on December 5.

While the supermoon will peak at 11:59pm, Dr. Brad Tucker, astrophysicist from the Australian National University says the best time to see the supermoon is as it’s rising above the horizon.

In Brisbane, this will be between 6:09pm and 6:20pm.

“When it’s rising on the horizon... that’s when you get to see it looking really huge,” Dr Tucker says.
“The moon’s orbit isn’t a perfect circle, it varies by 40,000 kilometres, which is quite a bit.

“So, sometimes it’s at its closest point in the orbit, which is what we call its perigee, so it’s a bit closer to Earth - just shy of 30,000 kilometres - and so if it’s closer to the Earth it can look bigger and therefore brighter in the sky,” he says.

[ THINGS TO DO ] Inside Brisbane’s FREE Tropical Display Dome at Mount Coot-Tha 🌿

Built in 1977, the Tropical Display Dome is one of Brisbane’s most recognisable botanical landmarks. Located within the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-Tha, this geodesic structure was designed by architect James Birrell, the same designer behind several of the city’s mid-century civic icons.

The dome is constructed from hexagonal glass panels supported by a steel frame and maintains a constant tropical climate inside. The warm, humid environment provides ideal conditions for rainforest species from across the world.

Inside, visitors can explore a curated collection of tropical and subtropical plants including bromeliads, orchids, palms, and epiphytic ferns. A central pond surrounded by dense greenery creates a natural micro-ecosystem that mimics the conditions of a lowland rainforest.

The design was innovative for its time, combining modernist architecture with environmental control technology to create a sustainable growing environment. It remains a significant example of 1970s bioclimatic design and an important part of the Gardens’ education and conservation programs.

Today, the dome continues to attract botanists, architecture enthusiasts, and visitors interested in tropical ecology. It offers a rare chance to experience rainforest conditions just 15 minutes from the Brisbane CBD.
