Resilience, teamwork and a spirit of adventure were on full display as our Duke of Edinburgh CAS group students spent the past three days and two nights exploring and camping in Lamington National Park while undertaking their Silver Award practice journey.

With crisp winter weather on their side, students embraced the challenges of hiking, navigation and nature, building confidence, independence and leadership skills along the way.

We are delighted to welcome them home and extend our sincere thanks to our dedicated staff, as well as Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre who also supported our students on this journey.

Accounting and finance skills were on show last Friday as QAHS competed in the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Accounting Challenge Finals.

Our Year 10 team prepared a case study response for The Hive, a co-working business challenge. Students were required to analyse key financial decisions including leasing versus buying, revenue options, cash flow, business viability, and financing. The team finished second in the preliminary rounds and demonstrated strong teamwork under pressure to pitch in front of industry professionals. This opportunity enabled students to showcase their accounting and financial decision-making skills through real-world application.

What does a future in health look like? Yesterday, our students had the chance to find out. Students, staff, caregivers and members of the wider QAHS community attended the first official Gold Coast Health Careers Fair at Southport Sharks Event Centre. Hosted by Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, the event gave attendees the chance to explore the incredible variety of careers and pathways available across the health sector.

With a wide range of booths on display, students were able to learn more about areas including the Creative Health Hub, paramedicine, occupational therapy, neonatal care, nursing and midwifery, medical imaging, nuclear medicine, surgical simulation and training, allied health, mental health, pharmacy, oral health, research, clinical education, operational support, administration and school based traineeship pathways.

For QAHS, this was a wonderful opportunity to connect classroom learning with future possibilities. Located only a short walk from campus, the fair also highlighted the depth of opportunity available within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.

Thank you to Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service for creating such a valuable event for young people, families and the broader Gold Coast community.

Science and engineering play a vital role in shaping the future, driving innovation and solving many of the world's most complex challenges. A group of our Year 10 students represented QAHS at the National Science and Engineering Challenge on Wednesday, competing against schools from across the Gold Coast and applying creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills to tackle real-world engineering scenarios through a series of hands-on challenges.

A special thank you to these students for giving their time during a busy exam period to embrace this valuable learning opportunity and represent the Academy with enthusiasm and dedication.

Music is a valued part of the QAHS IB CAS programme, providing students with meaningful opportunities to develop their creativity, collaboration, and performance skills while pursuing their passion for music.

We are proud to announce that following Platinum Awards for the QAHS Big Band, Concert Band, and Strings at the recent Fanfare Festival, the QAHS Strings Ensemble, conducted by Ms Inglis, has been selected as one of only five ensembles across the region to perform at the Regional Fanfare Finals on Wednesday 17 June.

Parents, family, and friends are warmly invited to attend the performance at Ormeau Highway Church, commencing at 12pm.

Observed globally each May, Youth Service Month recognises and empowers the next generation of leaders through service, mentorship, and community engagement.

On behalf of our QAHS Interact CAS Group, we are proud to share their insightful compilation which showcases the many meaningful CAS service opportunities available at QAHS and highlights the positive impact our students are making both within the Academy and throughout the wider community.

Congratulations to the Year 10 QAHS Mooters competing in their first moot with Griffith University today. Preparing submissions for both The Crown and the Appellant in relation to a criminal law drugs possession and trafficking case, both teams were commended by the Griffith Academic ‘Judge’ for their cogent arguments and structured submissions whilst handling the demands of rigorous questioning from the bench. We also commend them for their team preparation and participation at competition level amongst the priorities of Semester Exam Block. If it pleases the Court.

And that’s a wrap on Gifted Awareness Week at QAHS! It has been an inspiring week recognising the many talents, perspectives and passions that make our Academy community so unique. We concluded the week with our annual Wellbeing Picnic in the Green Heart, bringing students together to connect and celebrate community, alongside a spirited Staff vs Student Futsal match and ended the day with an informative Thrive session featuring alumna Victoria, Yea Jin and Kartik, who shared their personal IB journeys, reflections and diverse pathways since graduating. Their stories reminded students that there is such a variety of pathways to success, and that individuality, curiosity and courage all contribute to a shared future full of opportunity - a wonderful way to head into exam block next week.

On Tuesday this week our netball team proudly represented QAHS at the Vicky Wilson Netball Cup, showing resilience, determination, and sportsmanship despite challenging weather conditions throughout the day. Competing against experienced opposition, the team secured several impressive wins and narrowly missed others by just a single goal.

A special shoutout also to our Year 10 student umpire who officiated all seven QAHS games, demonstrating outstanding commitment and school spirit.

Congratulations to all involved for representing QAHS so proudly on and off the court. Go the 45ettes!
