Eva agreed to consensual s*x with a man she had met.

As they were having s*x, however, and without communicating with her about it, he started to strangle her.

Strangulation during s*x, including a lack of consent, was not new to Eva, but the force the man used in this
instance was terrifying.

Eva’s experience of strangulation during s*x is all too common. It is also incredibly dangerous. Medical experts say that there is no safe way to strangle.

We can’t allow this shift in cultural norms to continue unchallenged.

Eva is sharing her story as part of the Breathless campaign in the hope that it may help prevent more women from experiencing s*xual strangulation.

Sexual strangulation is too common. But it is also incredibly dangerous.

A new survey from shows how p**nography and social media are influencing what’s seen as ‘normal’ — with p**n the most common source of information about s*xual strangulation.

Our Breathless campaign raises awareness of the real risks — from headaches and depression to brain injury, stroke and death — and calls for open, honest conversations about consent, p**n, and s*xual safety.

I was delighted to speak at the Melbourne launch of the Adolescent Man Box research by

This important new study offers powerful insights into how boys and young men are navigating manhood today — and the models of masculinity that help or harm them, and those around them.

The findings show real cause for hope: many boys are rejecting restrictive gender rules. But it also highlights where work remains — especially when it comes to violence, mental health, and exposure to violent po*******hy.

I look forward to seeing how policymakers, educators, community leaders, and each of us can use this research to further efforts to prevent violence, help boys reject the confines of the Man Box, and support them to build connection, belonging and meaning.

It’s front and centre on mainstream p**n sites and many social media platforms, pushed by recommendation algorithms on a drive to maximise engagement and profit. It’s a world away from the days when “hardcore” p**n meant an erect p***s. But we might be on the brink of change…

The public appetite for regulation has shifted. For a while, many believed that a hands-off approach to regulation would strengthen our s*xual freedoms and protect our right to privacy. In reality, it’s done the opposite. Most po*******hy today suppresses our s*xual freedom. Content warning: discussion of s*xual violence

Practitioners and researchers around the world have been raising the alarm about po*******hy’s role in harmful s*xual behaviour for years. It’s so important that we’re having this conversation in the public domain.

Last month I interviewed a South African clinician who works with children and young people who have engaged in harmful s*xual behaviour and/or are victim-survivors of s*xual abuse, and she described the same types of scenarios - where children are reenacting things they’ve seen in po*******hy on their siblings, peers or pets.

These are difficult conversations to have, but we must keep having them. And we need to take action to prevent these harms before they occur. That includes regulations to prevent children’s exposure to po*******hy.

Strangulation - often referred to as ‘choking’ - has become a part of the s*xual script for many young people, and they are often unaware of many of the serious risks and harms for those who experience it.

There is a whole range of information available online about s*xual strangulation. Unfortunately, most of this content isn’t developed by people who understand the risks of engaging in the practice.

One of the aims of the Breathless campaign, by It’s time we talked, is to make it easier for young people to access information from more reputable and trustworthy sources.

Today we’re launching a new section on our website that features frequently asked questions about strangulation - with information and videos from our interviews with strangulation experts.
