The classroom speaks before we do.
Before we ask what children are learning, we look at the environment, the shelves they can reach, the unfinished work still on the table, their own ideas on the wall.
Accessible resources grow independent children.
Displayed work tells them they matter.
The room is already teaching. We just have to listen.

Exploring the seasons through blooms

This week our provocation table grew from The Big Book of Blooms, inviting children to look closely, sort, wonder and inquire “I wonder…?”

Open-ended provocations like this treat the environment as the third teacher and children as capable researchers. They build scientific thinking, a sense of place, and care for the living world.
Beautifully complemented by our off-site Friday at Kings Park, where the same seasonal story unfolded among the wildflowers.

What bloom has caught your eye this season?

This week we’re diving into stories, imagination, and the magic of reading. From cosy story corners to shared adventures between the pages, our HSE community is celebrating the power of books to connect us, spark curiosity, and open new worlds.

Here are a few of our wonderful Hensmanians sharing their favourite stories, to help grow a lifelong love of reading.

Our students have been getting lost in the threads with the incredible Polly, who has a true wealth of knowledge.
Learning the ropes (literally) of weaving, the rhythm, the patience, the quiet satisfaction of watching something take shape under your hands.
So grateful for the guidance, the stories, and the deep cultural knowledge that comes with every warp and weft.

Story tables are pure magic for little learners!
This term we’ve been living inside ‘The Bad Guys’ series… and today the chicken coop delivered a surprise letter from the bad guys themselves, asking for our help!

We created a story table to show the delivery of the letter. It set the scene perfectly for the children to develop some cool ideas and jump right into the story theme, building oral language, comprehension, storytelling confidence and a genuine love of literacy along the way. No worksheets required.

Who knew a letter from the bad guys could create such good learning?
