Why General Menopause Advice Doesn’t Work for Instructors

Most menopause advice is written for the general population. It is designed for women who might exercise a few times a week, who can adjust their schedule when they feel tired, and who can prioritise rest without it affecting their income or responsibilities.

That is not the reality for a group fitness instructor.
You might be teaching multiple classes a day. You might be demonstrating high-repetition movements, managing intensity, cueing clearly, and motivating your participants, even when your own energy feels low. Your workload is not optional. It is structured, consistent, and physically demanding. And this is exactly why general advice does not work for group fitness instructors.

When the body starts to change through perimenopause and menopause, the demands of teaching do not change with it. That mismatch is where many instructors begin to feel the strain...

I want to share a short story from a participant who pulled me aside after class a few weeks ago.
She’s been doing aqua for years.
Not new, not unfit, just your classic, loyal, twice-a-week regular.
She said:
“I love this class… but sometimes I can’t keep up. Not because it’s too hard, because I don’t understand where we’re going next.”
She explained that the instructor changed moves quickly, switched intensity without warning, while she tried to figure out what was happening.
Then she said the sentence that stuck with me:
“When the pattern changes too often, I stop feeling like I’m exercising and start feeling like I’m chasing.”
Chasing.
Not exercising.
And here's the important part:
She wasn’t blaming the instructor.
She liked the instructor.
She respected the instructor.
She just wanted to feel like she could keep up.
When she attended a class with clearer formulas, clear options, predictable layers, she said:
“It was the best I’ve felt in ages. I actually worked harder because I wasn’t confused.”
This is the quiet reality we often forget:
Participants aren’t asking for fancy choreography. They’re asking for a pattern they can learn and a pace they can trust.
That’s exactly why we created Aqua Little Combos.
A structure that makes every participant feel:
✔ Included
✔ Safe
✔ Confident
✔ Able to choose their level without guessing
And it helps you as the instructor feel grounded, planned, and in control, even when your class is a mix of ages, abilities, and personalities.
Early Bird ends 13 January
$95 (full price $115)
Recording included. CPD’s included
If you want to deliver classes where participants stop “chasing” and start exercising, this workshop will give you the tools to make that happen.

Okay… I’m going to share something most instructors would never say out loud. Ready?
There are days, even after decades of teaching, when I’ve walked onto the pool deck, looked at my class, and thought:
“Right. We’re going to… um… start with… something.” 😅
• Not because I don’t know my moves.
• Not because I don’t love teaching.
• But because sometimes the brain decides to take a little holiday at the exact moment you need it.

And if you’ve taught aqua for any length of time, you’ve probably had at least one of these moments:

Pool Deck Confession #1
You start a move and then think, “Wait… what was I going to do next?”

Confession #2
You accidentally make up a new combo on the spot… and then can’t remember it the second time around.

Confession #3
You teach a move, the group LOVES it, and your brain whispers,
“Brilliant! Do it again next week.” But next week? It’s gone. Completely gone.

Confession #4
You promise the class “we’re travelling next” …and then realise there’s nowhere to go because the pool is packed to the walls.

Confession #5
You think,
“I wish I had something simple I could trust every time.”
• And that last confession? That’s the real one. The honest one. The one every instructor eventually reaches:
• “Give me one structure I can rely on… so I don’t have to reinvent the wheel every class.”

That’s exactly why we created Aqua Little Combos.
It’s the workshop that takes the guesswork out of class planning, not by giving you choreography to memorise, but by giving you plug-and-play formulas that work in ANY class, with ANY level, on ANY day your brain decides to go quiet.

Early Bird ends 13 January
• $95 (full price $115)
• Recording included. CECs included.
If you’d like your 2026 classes to feel easier, smoother, and way less “let’s hope this works,” then you’ll want this session.

No judgment here, just tools that keep you cool, calm, and collected on pool deck.

Let me tell you a quick story from last week.
i messaged after class, exhausted, frustrated, and a bit deflated.
I said:
“I walked onto the pool deck, full of energy...and then I realised that I had left my routines at home. I had moves. But I didn’t have a plan.”
My class wasn’t terrible.
• Everyone moved.
• People smiled.
• No one complained.
But when I got home, I realised something:
“I didn’t feel confident. I felt like I was reacting instead of leading.”

If you’ve taught aqua for a while, you know this moment.
You know the feeling of trying to read the room, manage different levels, keep things flowing, keep your brain from scrambling, and somehow still deliver a class that feels intentional.
And you know the strange kind of fatigue that comes after a class like that, the kind that has nothing to do with physical effort and everything to do with decision overload.
When I asked her what she wished she had in that moment, she said:
“Just a structure I could rely on. Something simple that works every time, so I’m not winging it when the pressure hits.”

That’s exactly what Aqua Little Combos gives you.
• Not a script.
• Not choreography to memorise.
• Not a list of complicated patterns.
But a repeatable structure you can fall back on even on your most tired days.
1. Three foolproof formulas.
2. Layers you can add or remove depending on who’s in front of you.
3. A system that keeps you grounded when your brain wants to sprint in ten directions.

And here's the part instructors love most:
You don’t need to reinvent every class.
You just use the structure, and the Aqua Little Combos takes care of you.

Early Bird ends 13 January

• REPS NZ CPDs: 2

As group fitness instructors, we thrive on movement, music, and the magic of connection. We give our all in every class, physically, mentally, and emotionally. But behind the smiles and high-fives, many instructors are carrying a hidden weight: burnout.

The truth is, most of us don’t even recognise the early signs. We think: I just need a day off. Maybe I need more coffee. I’ll push through this week and feel better. But often, what’s happening is deeper. Burnout creeps in slowly, and if left unchecked, it can not only take us out of the studio, it can impact our health, happiness, and longevity in this career. https://www.mygroupmove.com/blog/burnout-the-silent-challenge-in-group-fitness
