Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Here's a hidden treasure from Gale Primary Sources.
On 17 March 1898, thousands of people gathered at the Friendly Societies’ Gardens in East Melbourne following a large procession through the city. The parade moved along central streets such as Bourke, Elizabeth, and Collins Streets before arriving at the grounds, where the main festivities were held.
It was one of the largest and most symbolically significant Irish-Australian celebrations of the late nineteenth century. It combined religious devotion, community solidarity, and political expression, reflecting the strong identity of the Irish Catholic community in colonial Victoria.
