Are you a singing teacher or vocal coach? We'd love for you to join our study looking at the demands on singing teachers' voices and their vocal health. The survey will take approx. 10-15 minutes.
β What's the study about?
We're exploring how singing teachers use their voices (i.e. vocal load) and their current and previous vocal health. We want to better understand the unique vocal demands of this profession. The project has ethics approval (IRB equivalent) from the University of Southern Queensland.
π See image below for further details.
β Important Note: You don't need to have had a voice problem to participate. We're interested in the experience of all singing teachers, both those with healthy voices and those who have encountered vocal challenges.

I have a couple of exciting events coming up this week - I hope some of you can join me for one of these π₯³
β Tomorrow Monday 19th May - I am joining Dr Dan for a live chat on his YouTube channel: Dr Dan's Voice Essentials.
We kick off at 1pm AEST (Brisbane time), and the video will be available afterward on the channel. We are chatting about vocal health for singers, and how your singing technique can help support your vocal wellbeing π€
β This Sunday the 25th May - I am presenting a workshop for ANATS (The Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing) in Canberra!
This is a completely free event for anyone in and around Canberra who wants to learn more about teaching Pop and Rock singing. It's my first visit to the ACT, and I can't wait to meet some local singing teachers π
If you live in Canberra and will be at the event - message me and let me know what topics you would love to cover π

Today's singing tip is about how to optimise your practice time β
Singing is a motor skill, so motor learning research is highly applicable to what we do. One of the most impactful findings from motor learning research is that 'distributed' practice can be more effective for learning than 'massed' practice.
Simply put, the more times you START to practice, the more progress you'll seeβespecially if the rest period between sessions is longer than the session itself.
To start with, see what happens if you split your usual daily practice duration into two, and add a break between them that's longer than the practice time. An added bonus is that you will start to build a stronger practice habit if you do it more frequently β
Let me know how you go!! ππΌππΌ
Read more: The application of perceptual motor learning theory to voice training was pioneered by Dr Katherine Verdolini-Abbott, amongst others. There are numerous articles by her and others available online which outline the concepts. A great place to start is Lynn Helding's book 'The Musician's Mind'. For singing teachers/vocal coaches, check out the article 'Motor Learning and Teaching Singing: An Overview' by Laura Crocco and David Meyer.

I just had a look back at the feedback comments I received from my last 'Learn To Sing' short course, and they made me smile π so I thought I'd share a couple here...
I'm not usually very good at accepting compliments, but hearing that I played a part in someone feeling more confident in their singing, or finding the fun in it feels pretty fantastic. After all, singing is meant to be fun, right?? π₯³
Hopefully 2025 can be a year of finding more joy in singing for all of us! β€
