🔬🧪 Year 9 Science Fair! 🧪🔬

Today, our Year 9 students showcased their scientific thinking, creativity and practical skills at our Science Fair! 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

Students chose an experiment to showcase, with a fantastic variety of practical investigations on display — from honeycomb experiments and CD rockets to mystery boxes and exploring static electricity using the Van de Graaff generator, as well as giant bubbles, sherbet, all the slimes and elephant toothpaste! 🚀⚡🍯🐘

It was fantastic to see so much curiosity, enthusiasm and confidence as students demonstrated their experiments and explained the science behind them. We are incredibly proud of the effort and hard work they put into their projects! 🌟

Well done to all of our Year 9 scientists and all of the primary students who visited today! 🔍🧬⚗️

Scott Roth, coach of the Tasmania JackJumpers came to visit and speak with students today. Students were engaged in learning about his basketball career, his coaching as well as how he ended up here ‘defending the island’. Scott spoke about a personal story about his dad with the final and powerful message being ‘Be great while no one is watching you’. Something to live by. Thank you Scott Roth and the JackJumpers.

Grade eight students have investigated how heat affects the rate of a chemical reaction by observing what happens when sugar is heated using a Bunsen burner. Students observed that as the sugar was heated, it melted and then gradually changed colour from clear to golden brown as it caramelised. Students discussed how increasing the temperature provides more energy for particles to react, causing the chemical reaction to happen more quickly. This experiment allowed the students to practise their observation skills, safely use a Bunsen burner, and collect evidence to help explain how temperature can affect the rate of a chemical reaction.
