Sparrow Early Learning Somerville Cottage

Sparrow Early Learning Somerville Cottage Sparrow Early Learning, to be our communities' number one choice for early childhood education. We provide care for children from 6 weeks through to school age.

Wagtail Cottage was originally built as a doctor’s surgery back in the early days of Somerville. It was bought and turned into an Early Learning Centre with a garden designed by famous landscape gardener, Edna Walling. Our centre prides itself on a warm friendly atmosphere that has often been referred to as an extension of the home. We aim to provide and offer care that compliments and extends on

the home life, supporting families to meet their child’s needs to the best of our ability. Our natural setting adds to the extension of home life, where the children are able to explore nature and be challenged by their investigations. Our relationships with families and children is of utmost important to us and we strive to support our families and children to feel part of our Wagtail family. We stand out above many centres with our community access program, where the children have the opportunities to access the community in many ways as of the programs within our centre.

To all the special people who show up with love 💙

This Father’s Day, we celebrate the dads, grandads, stepdads, uncles, carers and father figures who make children feel safe, supported and loved.

Thank you for the stories, the cuddles, the encouragement, the silly moments and the everyday care that helps children grow with confidence.

From all of us at Sparrow, Happy Father’s Day to every family celebrating this weekend.

They only see the magic. We see everything that happens behind it.

The early mornings. The messy moments. The big feelings. The endless questions. The little victories. The cuddles, the laughs, the patience and the love.

To every Sparrow educator, thank you for giving so much of yourselves to the children in your care.

You make more of a difference than you’ll ever know.

Happy Early Childhood Educators Day. 🐦

🎉 Congratulations to our Hayley
Educator of the Month for July! 🎉

Hayley has recently completed her traineeship, where she successfully obtained her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, an amazing achievement!

Hayley is such a bright, caring and loving educator, and it is clear just how adored she is throughout the service. You can hear the excitement as soon as she enters a room, with the loud and enthusiastic “HAYLEY!” from the children!

We are so proud of everything Hayley has achieved and the beautiful relationships she has built with the children, families and team. Congratulations, Hayley this recognition is so well deserved! 💕🌟

"Community" means something different when you're four years old.
It's not a big word. It's a friendly wave. A favourite librarian. A walk to the local park. The excitement of choosing a dinosaur book to take home.

These moments may seem small, but they're how children begin to understand where they belong.

By connecting with the people and places around us, children build confidence, curiosity and lasting relationships with the communities they call home. That's why community connections are such an important part of life at Sparrow. 💛

There’s a lot that happens at Sparrow that you don’t always see, and safeguarding is a big part of that.

It’s the quiet observations. The check ins between educators. The careful documentation. The conversations that happen behind the scenes to make sure every child is safe, supported and heard.

It’s constant, intentional and always centred on children.

When mornings are busy, simple wins make all the difference.

These 3 ingredient oat pancakes are a quick, nourishing option you can make with things you probably already have at home. They’re soft, easy for little hands to hold, and a great way to involve children in the kitchen through mashing, mixing and pouring.

Small moments like this help build confidence, independence and a positive relationship with food from an early age.
Save this one for a busy morning or slow weekend breakfast. 🥞🍌

Today our Studio 5 children had the privilege of visiting Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association, where we spent time connecting with our local community and learning from one another.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our children to experience the importance of culture, community, and belonging in a meaningful and respectful way. Through shared stories, conversations, and experiences, they gained a deeper appreciation for the rich traditions and ongoing contributions of the Bunurong people and the wider Aboriginal community.

We are grateful to everyone at Willum Warrain for their warm welcome, generosity, and for sharing their knowledge with us. Experiences like these help nurture respect, curiosity, and a strong sense of connection to the community around us.

Thank you, Willum Warrain, for such a memorable and inspiring visit. We look forward to continuing to learn together. 💛🖤❤️
