🌪️ Unprecedented Weather in Circular Head, Tasmania: Record-Breaking Winds and Heavy Rainfall 🌧️
In the past week, long-term locals in Circular Head have been saying they've never seen weather like this before. With record-breaking winds and intense rainfall, it’s no wonder everyone is talking about it!
💨 New Wind Records
The previous wind gust record for Smithton was 109 km/h, set back in 2013. But this week alone, we broke that record twice: first on 28th August with gusts hitting 111 km/h, and then on 31st August, reaching a new high of 124 km/h. These powerful winds caused significant damage, bringing down trees, cutting power, and impacting homes across the area.
🌧️ Heavy Rainfall Adds to the Challenge
Alongside these strong winds, Smithton and nearby areas recorded over 167 mm of rain in August, well above the usual monthly average of 126.4 mm. This combination of wind and rain has led to flooding, road closures, and countless fallen trees, making it a challenging time for everyone.
🛡️ How to Stay Safe During Severe Weather
The Tasmania SES has shared important steps to help keep everyone safe:
- Secure Loose Items: Ensure outdoor furniture, garden tools, and loose objects are secured to prevent them from becoming dangerous in high winds.
- Prepare for Power Outages: Have a torch, extra batteries, and a portable phone charger ready. Unplug appliances to protect them from surges.
- Avoid Floodwaters: Don’t drive or walk through flooded areas—it’s more dangerous than it looks.
