lakes and dams as a significant inland drowning location.
Why lakes are dangerous:
π§ Lakes can look calm β hidden drop-offs and deep water can catch people by surprise
π§ Cold water β sudden cold can cause panic and make swimming difficult
π§ Hidden hazards β rocks, logs, weeds and muddy bottoms are often hard to see
π§ No lifeguards β most lakes are unpatrolled, so help may not be nearby
π§ Weather can change quickly β wind and waves can make it difficult to get back to shore
How to stay safe:
β Always swim with a friend, never alone
β Wear a lifejacket when boating, kayaking or paddleboarding
β Enter the water feet first and avoid diving
β Stay close to shore and only swim in safe, known areas
β Always supervise children within arm's reach
Lakes may look peaceful, but hidden hazards, cold water and deep drop-offs can make them dangerous. Respect the water and always swim safely. π
