Yesterday, I had the privilege of being the guest speaker for the wonderful Gledswood Hills Probus Group.

What a fantastic group of vibrant, positive people who are truly making the most of their retirement. It was a pleasure to spend time with them discussing all aspects of personal safety and self-defence—from avoiding scams and improving home security, to maintaining personal space, situational awareness, and of course, a little hands-on self-defence.

We shared plenty of laughs throughout the session, along with a few more sobering moments as some members courageously shared their own personal experiences. Those stories are always a reminder that awareness and preparation really do matter.

One message I always leave with people is this: you are smart, capable and savvy—keep it that way. Be confident when you're out and about, stay aware of your surroundings, and trust your instincts. If your sixth sense isn't tingling, then relax and enjoy another wonderful day. But if something doesn't feel right, listen to it and act accordingly.

And to everyone who attended today, I hope you'll always remember the jar of Vegemite and the frying pan! 😊 They may seem like unusual teaching props, but they were there to remind us that distractions—and opportunities—come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it's the simple, everyday things that help us remember the most important lessons.

A heartfelt thank you to the Gledswood Hills Probus Group, and to the many Probus clubs I have had the honour of speaking with over the years. Every group is wonderfully unique. Whether the topic is self-defence, healthy longevity, falls prevention, social connection, or living well as we age, we tailor every presentation to suit the interests and needs of the group.

Thank you for making me feel so welcome. It is always a privilege to share, learn, and connect with such inspiring members of our community.

As we settle into August, winter can start to feel a little long.

The mornings are colder, the days are shorter, and it's easy to lose motivation. For many people, this time of year can also be when feelings of loneliness, stress, or low energy begin to creep in.

If you're feeling that way, you're certainly not alone.

One of the most powerful things you can do for your mental wellbeing is simply keep moving. It doesn't have to be intense. A gentle walk, a Tai Chi class, some stretching, gardening, dancing in the lounge room, or catching up with friends over a coffee after exercise can make an enormous difference.

Movement isn't just about keeping our bodies healthy—it lifts our mood, clears our mind, reduces stress, improves sleep, and reminds us that every day is worth embracing.

So this August, make a promise to yourself:
💙 Get outside when you can.
💙 Keep your body moving.
💙 Stay connected with others.
💙 Be kind to yourself.
💙 Remember that spring is just around the corner.

Sometimes the smallest step outside your front door is the biggest step towards feeling like yourself again.

If you're looking for a supportive community to help keep you motivated this winter, we'd love to welcome you. At The PIT Martial Arts, Health & Fitness we offer classes for children, teens, adults and seniors, with something to suit every fitness level and every stage of life. Explore your options at www.thepitmartialarts.com.au or get in touch—we're always happy to help you find the right class.

Stay active. Stay connected. Stay hopeful.

Your mind and body will thank you for it.

❄️ Winter doesn't last forever... but the healthy habits you build today can last a lifetime.

THE PILLARS OF THE DOJANG

Behind every great martial arts system stands an extraordinary group of Black Belts who choose to serve before they lead.

Within the TKD Kwon Bop Do Federation, we are privileged to have more than 30 dedicated Black Belts—men and women who are remarkable technicians, continually refining their Tae Kwon Do skills while helping others discover theirs.

Every training session, they stand beside our coloured belt students as mentors, teachers and role models. They encourage, guide and challenge those following in their footsteps, while never losing sight of their own journey of learning. They inspire those behind them and relentlessly pursue the example set by those before them, knowing that true mastery is a lifelong pursuit.

These Black Belts are the pillars of our Federation. Their strength is measured not only by their technique, but by their humility, generosity, consistency and willingness to invest in others. They understand that a black belt is not the end of the journey—it is the beginning of a greater responsibility.

The true strength of a martial arts system is not found in its buildings, its trophies or even its history. It is found in its people—a community united by heart, passion, courage, discipline and an unwavering commitment to help one another grow.

Every class is an opportunity to strengthen the spirit, discover courage, remain loyal to one another and be devoted to excellence in every aspect of life. These are not simply lessons for the dojang floor; they are values that shape families, workplaces and communities.

This is the legacy our Black Belts protect.
This is the standard they uphold.
This is the culture they pass on to the next generation.

Strength. Discipline. Respect.
A legacy is not built by one person—it is carried forward by many.

THE STRENGTH BEHIND THE LEGACY
"For our members, it is simply normal. For the martial arts community, it is exceptionally rare."
Standing alongside our Masters is an exceptional team of 3rd Dan Black Belts and above—dedicated martial artists who continue to learn, grow and lead under the guidance of Grandmaster Nick Donato and our senior Masters.

Together, they contribute more than 150 years of continuous martial arts training, bringing an extraordinary depth of knowledge, experience and mentorship to every class. Some proudly operate schools of their own, while others teach regularly at The PIT HQ in Smeaton Grange, ensuring every student benefits from the highest standard of instruction.

On any given training night, the collective knowledge available on the dojang floor is truly second to none. Every rank—from the newest white belt to the most experienced black belt—has direct access to generations of practical experience, technical excellence and genuine mentorship.

For our members, this level of instruction has become the norm. Yet in today's martial arts world, it is incredibly rare.

It is magic in motion—where knowledge is freely shared, growth is celebrated, community is strengthened and every individual is encouraged to become the very best version of themselves.

This is more than martial arts.

It is people investing in people.
It is tradition meeting the future.
It is what it truly means to be human.
