‘‘Learn Laugh Live"
U3A Sunshine Coast has over 200 classes and activities provided by volunteers to promote active lifestyles for mature age members. U3A offers academic and skills subjects, arts and crafts, exercise and social activities. Classes are conducted in various venues on t

he Sunshine Coast. The year is divided into four terms, similar to school terms. The speaker and topic change every week or two weeks. Lectures are held in: the U3A Lecture Room at the University, Caloundra, Maleny, Mudjimba and Nambour. Social: Throughout the year various social activities are organised. These have included day trips to the theatre, restaurants and long, group tours. Health, Fitness and Sports: Groups include: aquacise, cycling, table tennis, tennis, ten-pin bowling, swimming, gentle stretching exercise, gym fitness, Tai Chi, Yoga, croquet, golf, lawn bowls and badminton. U3A has a close relationship with the University of the Sunshine Coast and members may sit-in on lectures at the University. U3A is an all-volunteer organisation. Membership of U3A Sunshine Coast is $40 per calendar year. To join U3A you use the Membership Pages. where you may also enrol in classes and activities. The annual membership fee covers as many classes/activities as you wish to attend. Note: Some classes may have a waiting list. Notionally, classes are all free but some venue locations levy a fee for U3A to use, so a number of classes have a moderate term fee to help cover that venue cost. Each year, U3A Sunshine Coast runs an Open Day or Expo where you can see displays of most of the classes, and meet the tutors.

Thank you Brian for sharing your skills with our members. We look forward to more chess classes in the future.

"What a wonderful Term 3!
I’ve had such a wonderful time running my very first Beginners’ Chess course at U3A this term. It’s been a real pleasure sharing the game with my “students” and watching everyone learn, have a go, and gain confidence along the way. I hope they’ve picked up a few useful skills — and perhaps even a little enthusiasm for the game!

We’ve certainly shared plenty of laughs, a few challenging moves, and hopefully discovered that chess can be every bit as much about having fun as it is about strategy.

If you’ve ever had an idea for a course you’d like to share with others, I really can’t encourage you enough to make some enquiries and give it a go. You don’t have to be an expert, just having something you’re passionate about and enjoy sharing can be enough.

It’s been such a rewarding experience, and I’m so glad I took that first step. Who knows… perhaps there’s a future U3A tutor just waiting to discover their own course idea!"

Positive World News — But How Much of It Is Actually True? 🤔

We’ve found a collection of positive news stories from around the world — but there’s a catch!
Some sound almost too good to be true…

Could your U3A Discussion Group have some fun researching these stories and working out which claims are factual, which may have been exaggerated, and which might not be quite what they seem?

🔎 A little research
💬 Plenty of discussion
🤔 Maybe a few surprises!

And the bonus question…
Can your group find another piece of genuinely positive world news that deserves to be on the list? 🌱

No prizes, just bragging rights and the satisfaction of uncovering some good news!
It’s also a great time to start thinking about what you might like to explore next year. If any of our classes have caught your interest, contact the tutor for more information.

The hidden cost of convenience ......

The strength that keeps us independent as we age is built through ordinary things we do every day.

Modern life has made everything easier — cars replace short walks, lifts replace stairs, deliveries replace shopping and carrying, and technology can even replace remembering, searching and problem-solving.

Convenience is wonderful. But our bodies adapt to what we ask of them.

If we spend most of the day sitting and rely on a 45-minute workout to provide all our movement, we're missing hundreds of little opportunities to move, balance, reach, carry, bend and use our muscles.

In the communities known for healthy ageing, movement is simply part of everyday life — walking, gardening, cooking, cleaning, carrying things and regularly getting up and down.

And it isn't just our muscles that need practice. Our brains do too. Sometimes it's worth trying to remember, work something out or find an answer ourselves before reaching for technology.

The goal isn't to reject convenience. It's to be selective about what we outsource.

Walk when you can. Take the stairs sometimes. Carry what you safely can. Cook, garden, clean, reach and move.
The gym is important — but everyday life should be part of the workout too.

We want technology to make our lives easier, not make us less capable of living without it. 💪🧠
