This morning we dropped off our Possum Box exhibit to Wollondilly Council in Picton for this year’s Together Arts Exhibition.

The project has been a real community effort from start to finish. Local Aboriginal elder Kazan Brown first sparked the idea as a way to help protect native wildlife. The Men’s Shed then built the possum boxes, and our children decorated them, turning each one into its own artwork with purpose.

As part of National Reconciliation Week, this year’s theme is “All In” — and we’re all in when it comes to caring for native animals and working together as a community.

We’ve proudly been part of the Together Art Exhibition for over 10 years now, and it’s always special seeing children’s voices and ideas represented in such a meaningful way.

Some of our Kangaroos were treated like VIPs again today as we got to tour inside and outside Warragamba Dam in places not open to the general public! We learnt about the animals in the area including the incredible eels. Thank you so much to the education team at

We were so happy to welcome Kazan back to our service today.

For those who don’t know, Kazan is our local Aboriginal Elder, and it’s always such a privilege when she spends time with us.

Today, she shared a short Dreaming story film that she helped create — Gurangatch and Mirrigan, part of the Gundungurra Dreaming — which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Kazan also brought along pieces of wood for the children to paint Mirrigan, connecting storytelling with creativity in such a hands-on and meaningful way.

Our Kangaroos children then proudly took Kazan through our gardens, where we spoke about native plants and ways we can continue to build our gardens and support local wildlife, including possums and bats.

We feel incredibly honoured and grateful for the time Kazan shared with us today. These experiences are so important in helping children build understanding and connection to culture and Country.

Sandpit play might look simple, but it’s doing a lot from a developmental perspective.

Digging, scooping and pouring build fine and gross motor skills and hand–eye coordination. Measuring, filling and emptying introduce foundational maths and science concepts like volume and capacity — using concrete materials verses a worksheet or stencil.

It’s also a powerful social space. Children collaborate, negotiate, problem-solve and create together.

And from a sensory perspective, sand is calming and grounding, giving children a safe space to unwind and regulate as they squeeze and manipulate the sand.

Add imagination into the mix — castles, roads, landscapes, bakeries — and you’ve got one of the most open-ended learning environments there is.

Messy? Sometimes.
Valuable? Always 💛

This morning’s learning moment was entirely child-led and full of curiosity.

From a selection of animal books and magazines, the Kangaroos researched different animals together. They shared ideas, listened respectfully to one another, and voted on which animal they’d like to explore as our Species of the Month — a decision that will guide our upcoming Kangaroos’ “Species of the Month” podcast 🎙️✨

What might look like “just books and animals” is actually deep learning in action:

• Social development – negotiating ideas, taking turns, expressing preferences, and respecting group decisions (reflecting Vygotsky’s view that learning is socially constructed).
• Literacy skills – engaging with nonfiction texts, building vocabulary, interpreting images, and connecting spoken language to meaning.
• Agency & voice – children directing their own learning journey, a key principle of Reggio Emilia, where children are seen as capable, competent researchers.
• Critical thinking – comparing information, justifying choices, and participating in democratic decision-making, allowing learning to happen through experience (Dewey).

By following the children’s interests, we’re not only supporting curriculum outcomes — we’re nurturing confident communicators, collaborators, and thinkers 💛
