So it happens to be world autism awareness day. I’m aware of it everyday. Acutely. And even with all of my training (Bachelor of teaching, postgrad in psych), I wasn’t prepared for the daily implications and applications of a spectrum condition.
We don’t call it a disorder in our home because that hurts a persons self identity, it’s a condition. The same way my daily condition changes so does a person living with autism. But here’s the thing about a spectrum condition. It won’t present the same way twice and whilst it suits people to think it has features or characteristics, it can’t because it sits in a spectrum. And that’s how I didn’t even notice it was there as it was in someone I adore ! So, world autism awareness day what is it to those living with it, surrounded by it and ultimately having to converse with it about the quality of yours and your families lives?
It’s a person first. A person with interests, hopes, wisdom and love. Then it’s a condition. And it’s our job as a society not to just understand the multiple and infinite ways ot presents, but also critically reflect on our conditions, judgements and capacity.
Because it’s usually not the person living with autism that judges their capacity, it’s you. Just like I met my understanding and expert knowledge, you will to. And that’s a great thing🤩
