"Why can't I just let it go?"
It's a question I hear often.
"I've been told to move on."
"It happened years ago, so why does it still affect me?"
"Why can't I just get over it?"
One way to understand this is to look at animals.
Imagine an antelope being chased by a lion. Every part of its body is activated for survival. Its heart races, stress hormones flood its system, and all of its energy is focused on escaping the threat.
If the antelope survives and reaches safety, it will often shake, tremble, or move in ways that help release that intense survival energy. It goes through a process that helps its nervous system return to normal before resuming grazing, no longer responding as if in danger.
In many ways, this is the difference between surviving trauma and completing a trauma response.
For humans, it can be different.
We may survive the event physically, but the nervous system can continue carrying the effects long after the danger has passed. This can show up as anxiety, hypervigilance, anger, irritability, emotional overwhelm, numbness, poor concentration, brain fog, sleep difficulties, difficulty relaxing, feeling exhausted, difficulty trusting others, or a persistent feeling of being stuck.
This is why healing is not about "getting over it." It's not about pretending it didn't happen. It's not about forcing yourself to move on.
Healing involves helping the nervous system recognise that the danger is over, allowing the body to gradually release what it has been carrying and return to a greater sense of safety, regulation, and connection.
There is nothing wrong with you because you haven't "moved on."
Often, your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do in order to survive.
Healing is not about getting over what happened. It's about helping the body and nervous system complete what it needed to do to survive, so it no longer has to live as though the danger is still present.
Sometimes the question isn't "Why can't I move on?" but rather, "What does my nervous system need in order to feel safe enough to let go?"
