๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ A very special goodbye

It was a very sad goodbye when our Japanese student visitors headed home on Friday after two wonderful weeks at Oak Flats High School.

What started as an opportunity for cultural exchange quickly became something much more meaningful, with genuine friendships forming between our Japanese visitors and their Australian buddies. ๐Ÿ’š

At our farewell afternoon tea, students exchanged heartfelt thanks and gifts. Some of our buddies had bought Australian animal plush toys and bags for their new friends, while our Japanese students had written touching notes of gratitude for their buddies. There were plenty of smiles, but also some very genuine tears as students said goodbye and promised to keep in touch, with hopes of visiting each other one day.

Over their final days, our visitors enjoyed even more Australian experiences, from bush dancing, Aboriginal dance and art, to playing cricket and taking part in a talent show. They even enjoyed a very Aussie birthday celebration with Vegemite sandwiches and fairy bread! ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

A huge thank you to Mrs Tolley and her Learning Support team, Aunty Lee-Anne Setter, our staff, buddies and students who helped make their visit so memorable.

And to our wonderful Japanese visitors, thank you for sharing your time, culture, laughter and friendship with us. We hope this is just the beginning of many lasting connections.

๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿชจ Year 8 Rock & Water Day
Knowing when to stand strong and when to adapt is an important skill for life.

Last Thursday, our Year 8 students took part in Rock & Water, a program designed to help young people build confidence, self-awareness, self-control and positive social skills through movement, games, discussion and practical activities.

Students explored emotions, communication, personal boundaries, relationships and social situations, while practising ways to stay calm under pressure, stand up for themselves, communicate respectfully and make positive choices.

There was plenty of energy and laughter throughout the day, with students challenging themselves through self-defence, physical games, role-play, neuroscience, body awareness and movement. Our girls also embraced the opportunity to try something unfamiliar through belly dancing, stepping outside their comfort zones and building confidence through movement.

At the heart of Rock & Water are two simple ideas:

๐Ÿชจ Be a Rock โ€“ when you need to stand strong, know your boundaries and be assertive.
๐ŸŒŠ Be Water โ€“ when you need to stay calm, communicate, adapt and find another way forward.

Underneath the fun was some important learning, helping our young people better understand themselves, respect others and build skills they can carry into friendships, school and life.

A fantastic day of connection, challenge and growth for Year 8. ๐Ÿ’š

The Term 3 Week 5 Newsletter | So Much to Be Proud Of ๐Ÿ’š
Itโ€™s amazing to see just how much has been happening at Oak Flats High School in the first half of Term 3!โœจ

From Public Education Week and Science Week, to our NAIDOC Week celebrations, Cultural Camp and Japanese student visitors, there have been so many opportunities for our students to learn, connect and experience something new.

Weโ€™ve also been celebrating student achievements in roller skating, gymnastics, cross country, debating, the Maths Challenge and more.

Weโ€™ve also been busy helping our youngest students take their first steps towards high school through our transition programs.

Our students continue to be an absolute credit to their families, our community and our school. We are so proud of the way they step up, show up and make the most of the opportunities around them. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ“ธ Year 11 Belonging & Aspirations Excursion โœจ

On Friday 7 August, Year 11 students travelled to Circular Quay for a day of exploring Sydney, connecting and building memories together as part of their Belonging & Aspirations program.

Students took part in a scavenger hunt around Circular Quay, capturing photos and completing challenges as they explored some of Sydney's iconic landmarks and surrounds. From the Opera House and Harbour Bridge to some more unexpected discoveries, students embraced the day and enjoyed spending time together outside the classroom.

A special thank you to Mrs Kuit, Mr Grieves, Mrs Stephens, Mr Jones, Mrs Jones and Ms Claydon for supporting our students and helping make this experience possible. ๐Ÿ’š

It was a wonderful opportunity for Year 11 students to connect, have fun and create some great memories together. ๐Ÿซถ

๐Ÿ”ง TRYING OUT THE TRADES! โšก
Sometimes the best way to discover whether something interests you is simply to have a go.

Recently, a group of enthusiastic Year 9 students got to try their hand at the electrical trade during a practical workshop delivered by Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP).

โšก Wiring an electrical switch power board
๐Ÿ”Œ Assembling and wiring an extension lead
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Developing practical, hands-on skills
๐Ÿ’ฌ Hearing from an industry professional about careers and pathways in the electrical industry

These career tasters give our students the chance to experience different industries, learn practical skills and start thinking about the possibilities beyond school. And who knows? A one-hour workshop today could spark an interest in a career tomorrow! ๐Ÿ‘

A big thank you to RIEP and the industry professional who shared their knowledge and experience with our students. ๐Ÿ’š

From GOLD in Bulgaria to the WORLD STAGE! ๐ŸŒโœจ
Following her outstanding performance at the Burgas International Acro Cup in Bulgaria earlier this year, Year 10 student Paytience and her team have now been selected by Gymnastics Australia to represent Australia at the Acrobatic Junior World Championships in Pesaro, Italy, this September. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

The World Championships are held only every two years, making selection to compete on this stage a truly remarkable achievement. ๐Ÿ‘

Paytience and her teammates have earned the opportunity to compete against the worldโ€™s best young acrobatic gymnasts after years of dedication and training. Paytience has been working towards this goal for more than seven years, training up to five days a week. ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ

And there has been even more recognition of her achievements closer to home.

We were thrilled to learn that Paytience was recently recognised in the NSW Parliament Hansard by Shellharbour MP Anna Watson, who congratulated her on representing Australia in Bulgaria and acknowledged the hard work and dedication behind her success.

From competing overseas to representing her country on the world stage, what an incredible journey! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‘

We are so proud of Paytience and wish her and her teammates all the very best as they prepare to take on the world stage.

Congratulations, Paytience! We canโ€™t wait to see where this journey takes you next. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ Netball Gala Day! ๐Ÿ
Our Year 9 and 10 boys and girls recently represented Oak Flats High School at the Netball Gala Day, displaying fantastic school spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day! ๐Ÿ’š

Students approached each game with enthusiasm and determination, working together as a team and encouraging one another both on and off the court. It was great to see everyone getting involved, giving their best effort and maintaining such a positive attitude. ๐Ÿ‘

The Gala Day was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their netball skills, build teamwork and enjoy some friendly competition against other schools.

Ms Casey was super proud of their excellent behaviour and sportsmanship. ๐Ÿ’š

A big congratulations to all our Year 9 and 10 students who participated and contributed to a fantastic day of netball! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘
