Oak Flats High School is a co-educational, government-funded school that is located on a beautiful landscaped 20 hectare site within Shellharbour City. Rules of Engagement

The Oak Flats High School Facebook group has been created with the best of intentions to help keep parents, carers and community members up to date and to share school related information. We encourage interaction from Facebook users with the understanding that the school does not endorse comments or wall postings made by visitors to the page. Keep all comments respectful with no swearing or personal criticisms. Inappropriate content will be removed. Comments are also subject to Facebook's Terms of Use and Code of Conduct.

2. We will not permit messages selling products or promoting commercial, political or other ventures. This is not a place for negativity. Please carefully consider what you post and comment. Do not post anything that may be hurtful to anyone or our school. If you have any great ideas that would benefit the students and our school community or you're experiencing problems or have any concerns please phone the front office 4256 1888 and arrange to speak to the most appropriate staff member. The school administrators regularly monitor the site and will remove comments that don't adhere to our Rules of Engagement. Facebook encourages all users to use the "Report" links when they find abusive content. Repeat offenders will be blocked from the page.

As we wrap up another busy term, we farewell our Year 12 students and look back on the many achievements, excursions, sporting successes, creative and leadership opportunities from the past five weeks at Oak Flats High School.

Catch up on the latest school news and important dates for Term 4.

We wish our school community a safe and enjoyable holiday break. The school office will be closed during the holidays and will reopen on Monday 12 October for our Staff Development Day. We look forward to welcoming all students back on Tuesday 13 October.🫶

We loved hosting our very first Community of Schools Spelling Bee at Oak Flats High School in Week 7! 🐝

Mrs Skender’s Year 7 Motivated Learners class helped host the event for Stage 2 and Stage 3 students from Oak Flats Public School, Albion Park Rail Public School and Balarang Public School, who came together for the grand final!

There was plenty of tension and excitement as the students tackled each new word. Congratulations to Giana from Albion Park Rail for taking out the Stage 2 title and Reid from Oak Flats for winning Stage 3. Well done to our participants, you were all amazing and brave!👏

Our little visitors were super impressed with the wonderful afternoon tea put on by Ms Telfer’s Year 11 Hospitality students, who even made bee-themed cupcakes! 🐝

A big thank you to all the students and staff who helped bring this wonderful event together. It made us proud to see our Oak Flats High School students sharing their skills and helping create such a welcoming event for our local primary schools. 💚

What a few weeks it has been for Year 8 student Xavier! 🏃‍♂️
Following his strong results at the NSW State Athletics Carnival, where he placed 3rd in two events. Xavier went on to compete for Team NSW at the Sport Australia Cross Country Championships at the International Equestrian Centre from 14–17 September.

Competing in the Under 15s Boys Multiclass events, Xavier came away with some amazing results:
🥈 2nd in the individual 3km
🥇 1st in the Teams event
🥈 2nd in the Mixed 4 x 1km Relay

Xavier ran the anchor leg of the relay as part of Team NSW, and had the privilege of being guided by Isaac Beacroft, the U20 World Record Holder in the 10,000m race walk, U20 Champion in the 5,000m and Commonwealth Gold Medallist in the 10k Race Walk. ✨

Team NSW had a very successful Championships, taking out four of the six shields, including the Cross Country, Relay, Aggregate and Most Improved Cross Country shields.

Xavier continues to go from strength to strength, and we are so very proud of his achievements. Congratulations, Xavier! 🎉

⚓ Check out Year 10 student Will F navigating during a recent whale-watching cruise. Will was among several Marine Studies students from across the Illawarra who wrapped up the 2026 Float Your Boat program learning about the Marine Tourism Industry.

Students set out aboard Cat Balou with the Shellharbour Wild crew, spending two hours on the water during whale migration season and learning more about the different roles involved in running a vessel, from safety and guiding to customer experience. 🐋

A crew member on board was also studying Marine Science at university, so she was able to answer students’ questions and share her own journey since finishing school, giving them an insight into where a career in the marine industry can lead.

The cruise was the final activity in a program that has introduced students to a wide range of marine careers, including opportunities with Marine Rescue, Ports, Water Police, marinas, and technical and trades roles.

Thank you to the supervising teachers, RIEP organisers and everyone involved in giving our students the chance to get out of the classroom and experience the marine industry firsthand. ✨

📚 Author Visit | Courtney Beaton ✍️
Yesterday, students in Years 9–12 had the wonderful opportunity to hear from Courtney Beaton, author of Emergence.

Courtney shared her writing journey and spoke about how she began writing during the challenging period of COVID. Rather than allowing a difficult time to hold her back, she turned it into an opportunity to create, write and bring her ideas to life, setting out to write an encouraging book for her daughter. 💡📖

Emergence is a Young Adult fantasy novel centred on 17-year-old Rae Taylor, a young surfer whose life changes when she discovers a hidden magical world connected to her family history. The story explores themes of self-discovery, resilience, identity, courage and finding your place. 📖✨

Her visit was an inspiring reminder that challenges can sometimes become the starting point for something extraordinary. ✨ Students had the opportunity to learn more about the writing process, the inspiration behind Emergence and what it takes to turn an idea into a published book. 📚

🔎 Inside the investigation
Around 60 Year 9 and 10 students were immersed in a forensic investigation during the interactive A Case of Identity incursion in Week 7. The school hall became an investigation scene, with a backstory, evidence cases and clues laid out for students to examine.

Taking on the roles of forensic scientists and detectives, students worked through their investigation sheets, carefully examining the evidence, discussing their findings and piecing together the clues to work out what had happened. 🕵️‍♀️🔬

Students weren't simply learning about forensic science, they were doing it. They actively applied observation, scientific thinking, reasoning and problem-solving as they worked their way through the investigation. With focus and collaboration, they pieced the evidence together and built their case.

A big thank you to Mr Outim and Mr McLean for organising such an engaging hands-on learning experience, and to Education Interactive for bringing forensic science into our school. 💚
