Today our children continued to explore their interest in cooking alongside Educators Judy and Hayley by making delicious butterfly cupcakes from scratch. The experience began with reading the recipe together, gathering the ingredients, measuring, mixing and watching with excitement as the batter was poured into each patty pan. There were plenty of smiles and even more anticipation as the cupcakes baked!

What we love most is seeing children's ideas shape our curriculum. Inspired by today's cooking experience, the children have already requested homemade pizzas for their next culinary adventure. To extend this interest even further, they worked collaboratively with Educator Hayley to co-construct a brand new Home Corner pizza shop, complete with menus, prices and plenty of imaginative play opportunities.

By following children's interests, we create meaningful learning experiences that encourage communication, collaboration, problem-solving, early literacy and numeracy, creativity and confidence, all while having lots of fun! πŸ’›

πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈπŸ’šπŸ’™ What a wonderful week celebrating NAIDOC Week! πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

This week our children immersed themselves in a range of meaningful experiences that celebrated and honoured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Through sensory play, creative art and hands-on activities using Indigenous colours and incorporating both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags, children explored culture through play, curiosity and creativity.

Our NAIDOC foyer display continues to grow each day, showcasing the children's learning, creativity and developing understanding of Australia's rich First Nations cultures. Throughout the week, children explored Aboriginal symbols, created artwork using natural materials, and participated in experiences that encouraged respect, connection and appreciation for Country and culture.

A special thank you to our incredible educators and community visitors for sharing their knowledge, stories and experiences with our children. The passing down of knowledge through storytelling, conversations and shared experiences helps create meaningful learning opportunities that will stay with our children long after NAIDOC Week has ended.

We are proud to continue embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our everyday program and celebrating the world's oldest continuing cultures. Thank you to all of our families who supported our experiences by contributing natural materials and joining us in celebrating this special week.

πŸ§πŸ’™ Supporting Our Community, One Sweet Treat at a Time! πŸ’™πŸ§

Today, a few of our educators visited a local bake sale to support Little La La’s Bakery. From cookies and slices to sweet loaves and creamy custard tarts, there was something delicious for everyone!

Pictured is our educator Katie and her son enjoying the experience and purchasing some of the baked goodies on offer. It was lovely to see children, families and community members coming together to support a local small business and celebrate the hard work, creativity and passion that goes into every treat.

Can confirm each treat is incredibly delicious 🀀

🌿 National Reconciliation Week – Day 2 🌿

Today, to continue our participation and acknowledgement of National Reconciliation Week, each room read Gudgad the Frog.

The children were highly engaged throughout the experience and absolutely loved the story, especially with the addition of visual supports and storytelling resources that helped bring the book to life.

Gudgad the Frog shares an important message about coming together as a community to protect and serve the Land.

Experiences such as these help foster curiosity, inclusion, empathy and respect as we continue learning together during Reconciliation Week and beyond. πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

🌿 National Reconciliation Week – Day 1 🌿

Today at Shellharbour City Children’s Centre, we were incredibly fortunate to have a family from our service join us for a meaningful cultural cooking experience with our preschool children.

Luke and Shilah thoughtfully prepared three tables of ingredients, allowing the children to participate in smaller group experiences where each child had the opportunity to add, combine and knead ingredients to create delicious Lemon Myrtle Scones. With guidance and support, the children worked collaboratively to successfully bake and enjoy their creations together.

Experiences like these provide valuable opportunities for children to engage with and appreciate cultural diversity, strengthen their sense of belonging, and build respect for the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how we can contribute to reconciliation in Australia. The 2026 theme, β€œAll In”, encourages us all to work together towards a more united, respectful and inclusive future for everyone

🚘 National Road Safety Week | 17–24 May 2026 🚘

This week, we join communities across Australia in recognising National Road Safety Week and the important message:
πŸ’› Drive So Others Survive πŸ’›
At our service, children will be engaging in conversations and learning experiences around road safety, helping them build awareness of how to stay safe as pedestrians and passengers.

We encourage all families to take a moment to reflect on the
simple actions that help keep everyone safe on our roads:
πŸš™ Drive as if your loved ones are on the road ahead
πŸ“΅ Remove distractions and never use your mobile phone while driving
⚠️ Avoid speeding, driving tired or under the influence
🚸 Slow down and protect vulnerable road users, including children, pedestrians and road workers

Together, we can help create safer roads for everyone in our community.
Take the pledge today πŸ”½
