🐘💚 Elephant Education Bite | The Power of a Trunk

An elephant's trunk is one of the most versatile body parts in the animal kingdom.

Containing thousands of muscles and no bones, it allows elephants to perform an incredible range of tasks every single day. They use their trunks to breathe, smell, drink, feed, dust themselves, greet one another, and comfort members of their herd.

Strong enough to lift heavy branches yet gentle enough to pick up a single blade of grass, the trunk is perfectly adapted to almost every aspect of an elephant's life.

It's another reminder that nature has designed these remarkable animals in extraordinary ways.

Veterinary Western Herbal Medicine (VWHM) provides us with increased options for patient therapy in addition to traditional veterinary therapies. By integrating VWHM into our clinic we have expanded our toolkit for patient care, increasing the quality of care for our patients and expanding options of treatments for our clients.
Topic Eight in KVC gives kids an introduction into different forms of medicine- Traditional, Western Herbal, Chinese Herbal, and Complementary therapies. Lots to learn!

WHY PERFORM BLOOD TESTS ON PETS?
We perform blood tests to check that your pet's blood cells are the normal shape and colour, are present in adequate numbers, and that internal organs are functioning normally.

The test results will also include levels of enzymes and electrolytes, which show the state of internal organs; increases or decreases in these results may alert us to a disease state of an organ. For example, for an animal about to have surgery, the liver and kidneys need to be functioning normally so the body can cope with an anaesthetic.

Whilst the vet performs an ‘external’ physical exam, blood tests are run to perform an ‘internal’ exam of red and white blood cells, and enzyme levels, to help us identify any unknown disease or health risk. For example, increases in white blood cells may mean infection, or low red blood cell levels may indicate anaemia.

In elderly animals, we will expect to see changes in organ function, e.g. we expect to see changes in liver and kidney function. Identifying these changes allows us to start supportive therapy to support the organs' function, prevent toxin build-up, and above all, increase longevity of our patients.

Regular blood tests in normal animals should be performed at least annually. Blood test changes can occur on a daily basis, so any existing disease states will require more frequent monitoring. Tests will be required immediately before any surgery - just like human surgery protocols.

Zebra stripes follow tension lines in the skin. In the future, when you plan a surgery that involves the skin, you will learn to always think about these tension lines to achieve cosmetic closure of your surgical site. This will apply to all mammals. In other words, always think about zebra stripes before surgery!!!
