Burnout vs Self Care
Protecting yourself from burnout is an essential act of self-love and care. It involves embracing self-care, setting healthy boundaries, and managing stress proactively.
Engage in nurturing strategies that assist you to become a better version of yourself!
1. Set Boundaries: Create clear separations between work and personal life. Designate specific times for work and relaxation and honour these times as much as possible. Resist the urge to check work emails or messages outside of your set hours. I understand that sometimes work isn’t 9 to 5. So, whatever hours your choose to work ensure that you still set the time for YOU!
2. Prioritise Tasks: Focus on what’s most important and urgent. Delegate or postpone less critical tasks whenever you can. Breaking large tasks into smaller, manageable steps can help prevent feelings of overwhelm. A fabulous matrix for this is the Eisenhower Matrix. P.S if you want to know more about the Eisenhower Matrix’s send me a message.
3. Take Regular Breaks: Allow yourself short breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge. Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique working for 25 minutes, then taking a 5-minute break, can help maintain productivity while preventing burnout.
4. Practice Stress Management: Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your daily routine, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness tasks. These practices can help you feel more relaxed and cantered. One of the best stress release I have encountered whilst working is to get outside and take a walk around the block during the day……mind you on some days it could have been 10 blocks! What every works for you and keeps you grounded.
5. Exercise Regularly: Engage in physical activities that you enjoy. Regular exercise can reduce stress, improve your mood, and increase your energy levels. Make this a priority in your schedule. To add to this each morning as you start the day, before you have your first cuppa before you pick your phone and start to scroll go outside and greet the day. You only need 5 minutes to just be and breath in the fresh morning air or walk on your grass barefoot to get yourself and grounded and ready to start your day.
6. Get Enough Sleep: Prioritise quality sleep by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and creating a relaxing bedtime routine. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to support your overall well-being and resilience to stress. Keep your room cool, remove all electrinos, no TV and certainly no phones. Remember your bedroom is made for two things only, amazing restfully sleep and s*x!
7. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and limit caffeine and alcohol intake, as these substances can contribute to stress and disrupt sleep patterns. I always look to apply the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time we are doing everything right and 20% is time for little craziness fun.
8. Seek Social Support: Stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues who provide emotional support and understanding. Sharing your feelings and experiences can help alleviate stress and prevent burnout. Don’t be afraid to share!
9. Set Realistic Goals: Break down long-term goals into smaller, achievable milestones. Celebrate your progress and adjust your goals as needed to maintain a healthy balance between ambition and self-care.
10. Seek Professional Help if Needed: If you’re experiencing persistent feelings of burnout, anxiety, or depression, don’t hesitate to seek support from a mental health professional. Therapy or counselling can offer valuable tools and coping strategies to help you manage stress and improve your well-being.
Remember, preventing burnout is an ongoing journey that requires self-awareness and consistent effort. By prioritising self-care and integrating these strategies into your life, you can protect yourself from burnout and cultivate a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
