🌿🚜 Learning Through Sensory & Imaginative Play 🚜🌿

Our toddlers have been enjoying a range of hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity and learning through play. Our construction sensory tray provided opportunities to dig, scoop, transport and explore using mini construction vehicles, sand, pasta and lentils. We also explored water play, encouraging the children to pour, fill, transfer and experiment with different materials.

Through these experiences, the children were developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, problem-solving, sensory awareness and imaginative thinking, while making choices and engaging with their peers and educators.

🌱 EYLF Learning Outcomes:
• Outcome 3 – Children have a strong sense of wellbeing – developing physical coordination and confidence through hands-on play.
• Outcome 4 – Children are confident and involved learners – exploring, experimenting, problem-solving and investigating materials.
• Outcome 5 – Children are effective communicators – expressing ideas and engaging in shared play and interactions.

🌈 Sensory Play Made Simple! 🖐️✨

Looking for easy, engaging sensory experiences to try at home? We've put together some of our favourite recipes for Cloud Dough, Oobleck, Play Dough, and Homemade Paint using simple household ingredients. These hands-on experiences encourage children to explore different textures, strengthen fine motor skills, spark creativity, and support language development through play.

Sensory play provides endless opportunities for learning while having fun, and the best part is that these activities are quick, affordable, and easy to recreate at home.

🐢 Parent Resource – Tucker Turtle Technique 🐢

One of the resources available through our service is the Tucker Turtle Technique, a simple social story designed to help children recognise, understand and regulate their emotions in a positive way. It introduces children to four easy steps to manage big feelings: recognising their emotions, stopping, taking three deep breaths and thinking of a solution.

This is a wonderful resource for families to use at home, particularly if your child is experiencing frustration, disappointment or anger. By practising the same steps in a calm environment, children can begin to build confidence in managing their emotions before challenging situations arise.

Some ways you can support your child at home include:
🐢 Encourage your child to "think like Tucker Turtle" when they become upset.
🌬️ Practise taking three deep breaths together to help calm their body.
💚 Talk about different "calming choices" that work for your child, such as having a cuddle, reading a book, drawing, listening to music or spending time in a quiet space.
💡 Once your child is calm, help them think of a solution together, such as asking nicely, sharing, taking turns or asking an adult for help.

Teaching children these strategies at home helps build emotional resilience, supports positive relationships and gives them lifelong skills to manage big emotions in a safe and healthy way. Through sensory exploration, children are encouraged to investigate, discover, and create using natural materials and tactile resources. These rich, hands-on experiences support the development of fine motor skills, sensory processing, early mathematical thinking, communication, and collaborative play, while fostering curiosity, resilience, and confidence as children experiment, make predictions, solve problems, and share their ideas with others.

The inclusion of Aboriginal symbols and natural elements provides meaningful opportunities for children to develop an appreciation of Australia's First Nations peoples, cultures, and histories. Through these shared experiences, children strengthen their sense of belonging within their learning community, learn to respect diversity, and begin to understand that different cultures, perspectives, and ways of knowing are valued. Exploring and caring for natural materials also encourages children to develop respect for the environment and recognise their role in contributing to and caring for the world around them.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.
