Nourishing the Mother

Nourishing the Mother Podcast on conscious parenting + relationship ♡

We’ll swap the wine for a cup of tea, a journal

Together we share a mix of story from the heart, wisdom from the soul, and practical tools for creating rich relationships and a deeply meaningful life. Julie enters the conversation through the lens of health and women’s embodiment, and Bridget through the lens of brain development and human behaviour. Captivating storytellers with a raw and honest edge, they seek to embody the sacredness of the

woman’s journey at the heart of the profound nature of the parent-child dynamic. You can download episodes directly to your phone, by searching 'Nourishing The Mother' in your smartphone Podcast App - or listening directly from our website.

Last episode, we started unpacking what’s actually underneath the feeling of being trapped by your life.

This time, we take the next step: working out whether the thing making you miserable is an unavoidable fact of your life...or a “should” you’ve become so attached to that you can no longer see another way. Because while you might not be able to change the school run, your workload, your children, your partner or the responsibilities sitting on your shoulders, but you may have far more choice in how you experience them than you realise.

Does it ever feel like you’ve disappeared inside your own life?

Not because you don’t love your children.

Not because you regret the life you’ve built.

But because somewhere along the way...
You stopped being the main character in your own story.

You became the organiser.

The default parent.

The mental load carrier.

The one making sure everyone else was okay.

And before you knew it, joy became something you used to have.

Play became something you used to do.

Freedom became something you used to feel.

So many women quietly grieve earlier versions of themselves.

The woman who had time.

The couple who could be spontaneous.

The version of themselves who felt vibrant, creative and alive.

That’s not selfish.
It’s human.

And perhaps the answer isn’t trying to get your old life back.
Because that season has passed.

Perhaps it’s asking a different question:
Who do I want to become in this season of my life?

Not in spite of the responsibilities.
But within them.

Because while this chapter is undeniably full, demanding and often relentless...
You still deserve moments that feel like yours.
You still deserve joy.
You still deserve to matter in your own life.

🚂 All aboard the Human Behaviour Discovery Train!

Next stop?
“Wait... that’s why I do that?!”

One of our favourite things about recording this podcast is getting gloriously nerdy about being human.

The weird little patterns.
The relationship dynamics.
The nervous system plot twists.

The moments where you suddenly realise...
“Ohhhh... that’s not just my partner being annoying.”

Or...

“Hang on... I think I’ve been doing that too.” 😅

The more we understand ourselves and each other, the less we need to blame, defend or shame.

And honestly?
We think that’s way more fun.

So if you’re as fascinated by relationships, psychology, attachment, human behaviour and all the beautifully messy ways we humans work...
Hop aboard.

There’s always room for one more on the Human Behaviour Discovery Train. 🚂

Pop culture has given us a false choice.

Either express it... or repress it.

As though those are the only two options.

So now we’re told:
“If you’re angry, let it out.”
“If you’re hurt, say it.”
“If you feel it, express it.”

But feelings aren’t always instructions.
They’re information.

There’s a profound difference.

Just because something feels true in the moment doesn’t mean acting on it will create the relationship, the life, or the version of yourself you actually want.

Consciousness asks a different question:

What is this feeling here to show me?

Not,

How quickly can I express it?

Emotional maturity isn’t repression.
It’s not bypassing.
It’s not pretending.

It’s creating enough space between what you feel and what you do that you can respond with integrity instead of impulse.

Because the goal isn’t to become someone who says everything they feel.
The goal is to become someone whose feelings are heard, honoured, understood, and then led by wisdom.

That’s not repression.
That’s self-leadership.

Apparently, somewhere in history, some dude decided the ideal va**na was two fingers wide.
Which dude?
What culture?
At what point in history?
And perhaps most importantly...𝗪𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗦?! 😳😂
No one seems to know.

And yet, here we are, still using it as a modern-day surgical standard.

Look, this episode is frankly too saucy to adequately splice into social media clips. 😂

Because Episode 561 of Nourishing the Mother is a very real, very honest and occasionally very funny conversation about one woman’s s*xual journey post-va**nal prolapse and hysterectomy surgery, in a heteros*xual relationship.

The questions you’re too embarrassed to ask.
The realities of s*x, or**sm, va**nal changes and trying to find your way back to a body and s*xuality that may not work the way they once did.
No polished wellness bs.
Just the conversation I desperately wish more women were having…and was available to me back when I was considering surgery.

🎧 Episode 561: The Hysterectomy Questions Everyone Wants to Ask but Doesn’t.

Listen wherever you get your podcasts.

And perhaps spare a thought for the millions of va**nas still being measured against the mysterious fingers of some unidentified man from history. 😂 WTAF.

Let’s talk about the invisible labour most women carry - the kind that doesn’t get thanked, tracked, or shared.

Globally, women still do 76% of the world’s unpaid care and domestic work (UN Women, 2022).
And in most households - especially with kids - the mental load is real.
It’s logistics, anticipation, remembering, managing, soothing, following up…
and still being expected to smile through it.

In this episode, I share how I used to feel:

“I don’t need all of this to change.
I just need you to see what I’ve carried today.
And thank me for it.”

It’s not always about outsourcing.
Sometimes it’s about acknowledging what’s being held.

And when it does need to shift?
You’re allowed to say:
“I can’t do this anymore.”
Even if you don’t have a solution yet.
Even if it feels scary to drop the ball.

It’s not selfish to stop pack-horsing the entire household.
It’s not dramatic to ask for help.
There are more options than:

Do it all.

Let it all fall apart.

You’re allowed to change the rules you’ve been silently playing by.
And to ask your partner to learn a new role in that, too.

“I could live without s*x. I don’t really think about it. In fact, I often avoid anything that might make him think ‘it’s on.’”

If that feels familiar, you’re not broken - you may just be confusing desire with wanting.

Desire isn’t always spontaneous.
It’s not always the “I feel h***y and want s^x” model we’ve been taught to expect.

For many women, especially mothers, desire is responsive.
It doesn’t appear on demand.
It wakes up once the conditions are right - when there’s safety, relaxation, connection…and TIME to drop out of your head and into your body.

This is the critical reframe:
👉 You don’t have to want it first.
👉 You only need to give yourself permission to step into situations that MIGHT spark desire.

Because desire isn’t gone.
It’s simply waiting for the right conditions to come alive.

✨ You’re not broken. You’re wired for love, connection, and safety - not pressure.

One minute, you’re caught in her orbit - again.
The next, you’re fantasising about cutting ties completely.

Welcome to the mother wound pendulum.
That space where your nervous system only knows two options:
→ Merging.
→ Repulsion.

You know how to over-function for her.
To anticipate her needs before your own.
To shrink so she doesn’t react.
To soften your truth to avoid her disapproval.
To feel guilt instead of choice.

You also know how to swing the other way.
To block.
Detach.
Shut down.
Close the door.
Withdraw every ounce of care so you can finally breathe.

Neither space is satisfying.
Neither feels like peace.
And maybe…
No one ever showed you what a middle ground could feel like.

Where you don’t lose yourself in her emotions,
but you don’t abandon your values either.
Where you choose how to relate,
instead of reacting from guilt, fear, or shame.
Where love becomes something you give with consent — not obligation.

If this hits…
You’re not broken.
You’re unwinding a lifetime of emotional entanglement.
You’re learning how to love without merging.
You’re rewriting the rules - for you, and for your lineage.

And that? Is sacred work.
The kind your body already knows how to do.
It just needs time, space…
And the kind of tools that honour both your sovereignty and your softness.

📝 I made a free worksheet for women like you - the ones untangling from guilt, reparenting themselves, and learning to show up in relationship on their terms.
