Today, I added some of my homegrown pumpkins to our nature table for some hands on sensory play.

The pumpkins had began to rot on the vine due to so much rain, and were subsequently ‘picked’ too early, but I wanted to collect some seeds, to dry and plant next season. I thought some hands on messy exploration was the perfect opportunity!

There has been much debate on the use of food as ‘play’ and I understand how some educators and families may shy away from it for many reasons.

However, I appreciate the chance to rethink and repurpose food destined for the compost, into a learning opportunity.

There are many benifits to this type of learning experience.

Munch and Move is a NSW Health initiative that supports the healthy development of children birth to 5 years.
One key strategy is to encourage children to explore food using their senses.

Supporting children to explore and experiment with food using their sensory capabilities allows opportunities to extend on their own thinking.
It promotes a better understanding of where our food comes from, the texture, sight and smell of different foods, and it also promotes discussion and interest in healthy eating and good nutrition.

This type of sensory play also has the additional benefits of promoting our character strength of Curiosity, extending on science concepts, fine motor skills and mathematical thinking, as children explore and experiment to their hearts desire.

This POP IT braille activity! 😍

Cut a Pop It square into 3 x 2 dots to form a Braille full cell.

Promotes awareness of Braille and also works on fine motor skills such as finger isolation, separation of the sides of the hand, eye-hand coordination.

Sadly, Rin’s Place will be closing soon.

Over the next two weeks I will be saying goodbye to all my little friends, and closing the doors.

This has been a tough decision.
Over the last five years I have poured everything into my family daycare, and for the most part I have loved the journey.
But, now it’s time for a break, and a new adventure.

There is nothing comparable to the role of a Family Daycare Educator.
Being an educator in your own home creates beautiful opportunities for relationships with children and their families, where children literally become part of your extended family.

Family Daycare has been a place where the children, their families, my family and myself have created a wonderful network of support and love to help children to thrive.

It has been a wild ride that’s for sure!
I have learned so much, had plenty of challenges, but most importantly, together with my children over the years we have created so many beautiful memories.

I have a passion for Early Childhood Education and Care, and will be staying in the sector.

My Rin’s Place Page will remain operational, as a place to share ideas, inspire and collaborate together.
If there is one thing I know about ECEC, there is always something new to learn.

Enjoy your own journey.
Cheers to new adventures.
Rin x

Happy Wednesday!
Today we had a visit from Richie and Sue from Budbudda Dreaming.
We made a Rainstick together to play along with other instruments in a wonderful musical soirĂŠe (complete with ballerina dresses!)

A Rainstick is a traditional instrument originating from Africa and makes a sound like steady rain.

We made ours with a cardboard tube, added nails and lentils, and decorated it with some very beautiful finger painting.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Happy Easter 🐰
At Rin’s Place we recognise many celebrations and special days throughout the year.
This helps to support children’s identity and their sense of belonging, builds connections, and also allows for opportunities for children to learn more about our world, celebrate and build respect for diversity and explore other ways of knowing and being.

“In an early childhood context, celebrations such as Easter are often a reflection of our society, history, culture and belonging’”.- Early Childhood Australia
