Some children love a timer, some get stressed out by it. This is when knowing your students matters. For children who love to beat the clock, speed reads are a great way to build automaticity and a fun way to show children how much progress they are making.

Sometimes the best resources are found by accident! I bought these little magnetic cubes at K Mart thinking they were magnetic tiles (which I'd planned to use for morphology activities). Instead, they ended up being perfect for work building! Chalk pens are easily wiped off the cubes with a damp cloth, so they have become a really flexible resource that the students and I love.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn to read through evidence-based instruction, early identification, and the support they need to thrive.

The goal isn't to become the next famous entrepreneur, actor, athlete, or inventor. The goal is to ensure that every child has the chance to reach their potential and celebrate their strengths and hobbies!

I love this and completely agree - reading should never be made to feel like a chore or a punishment. I always take the time to get to know what motivates my learners so that they look forward to their sessions.

Goals!!! What can we do as teachers to make this happen more often?

Ever wonder how to help students become confident, fluent readers and spellers?

I use the Sounds-Write programme in all my sessions.

Sounds-Write is a highly effective, systematic synthetic phonics programme.

Instead of expecting students to guess words or memorise word shapes, students learn how to recognise the sounds in words and to represent those sounds in writing.

It is structured, successful, and, best of all, brilliant for building real reading independence.

We often start our sessions with a 'Sound Swap' to get ears, brains and hands working. Children need to listen carefully to work out which sounds they need to change to make the words. This is great for building knowledge and skills - and it's a fun way to get started while practising important

Learning is so much more fun with a little friend 🐲🦔🦦🐕. Incorporating childrens' interests into sessions helps to keep them motivated and engaged.

Reading doesn't have to be sitting down with a book. Avoid the holiday slide by incorporating reading and writing into daily activities, like cooking! My handy hint is to print out the recipe so it doesn't matter if you get food all over it (I can't help with the rest of the kitchen though 👩‍🍳).
