The Homesteading School

A huge shout out to Sheree at The Homesteading School for supporting our students with her purchase of a custom made sheep/goat feeder.

For any enquiries please phone Loretta Payne on 4943 8111.

The Homesteading School has a new video out.

This week took Alexes to where she chatted with Luke and Harmony about "Living Things". Such a juicy episode full of lots of information. Grab a cuppa, and pen and paper to take notes, these guys have so much knowledge to share.

Also pop over to The Homesteading School and give us a like to keep up to date with what's happening in our region and learn all things homesteading! We have new episodes coming out weekly :)

The Homesteading School is a place to learn how to make our homes into productive & happy places

Operating as usual

Heroes are the rocket boosters that help move your dreams into your reality. The choices you make every day are driven by what you believe and who you believe. Make sure you have worthy heroes to listen to, learn from and guide you so that you can build a life rich in meaning and purpose.

Never underestimate what you can grow in your own back yard. You may have tried and failed and tried and failed again but the reality is, if you plant a seed eventually, with the right conditions it will grow.

Homesteading isn't easy nor for the faint of heart. Death and life make up the underlying drum beat of what we do, but somehow there remains a sense of profound privilege being so close at hand to this cycle. While we can grow more accustomed to taking the life of another creature either to end its suffering, take away the danger it presents or harvest it to feed our family to have in your hands this responsibility always leaves me with a deep sense of gratitude and awe.

Tomorrow morning the fortnightly trade day is on in the big shed behind Third Ground Coffee House. Starting at 8:30 this is a great opportunity to meet other like-minded home growers and producers. No matter how much you bring you will always leave feeling like you get more!

We've been a bit quiet here on the homesteading school fb page this quarter as Sheree and I work diligently on some of our own home projects. In our last newsletter we mentioned that we had lots of meat harvesting to do and now we both have freezers full of yummy home-grown meat (chicken, lamb and goat). It reminds me that while one area in your life may be going through a dormant phase another gets your full attention and there is abundance that flows from that!

The birds are singing and the flowers are all out in bloom, spring has arrived! This Saturday the Spring Feast is on at 6 pm in the backyard of Third Ground Coffee House. Each season we hold one of these wonderful get-togethers to connect up with each other, celebrate our wins and have some laughs. Bring a dish of food to share and come enjoy some live music.

Jeanie and Marks Permaforce is happening tomorrow from 9 to 12 noon! A permaforce is where you go to someone’s house and help them get their garden in order. A jo. That may take them weeks with a dedicated group can be done in a morning! Everyone is welcome. There will be bamboo poles for people who come!

Jeanie and Mark's Permaforce is coming up this Saturday! For this one we are helping them get some of their gardens tidied up and mulched. We are also cleaning up a big stand of bamboo polls which people can take home with them (they make great garden trellises) and Jeanie will also have a mini yard sale/give away (grab your self an awesome bargain!). Saturday 9 am 48 Gumnut Drive, alligator creek. Bring a dish to share. Gloves, hat and water

Hello Everyone, here is the calendar for the upcoming Spring Events

Don't forget local Trade Days are on each fortnight (next one tomorrow morning at 8.30am at the big shed behind Third Ground)

It is a wonderful morning where you can meet other growers, chat about what's happening in your garden and get some goodies! You don't need to bring anything to swap if you haven't got anything growing, just come along and get inspired to start 😀

We have decided to postpone the Mini Homesteaders Camp till September but we couldn't let our Mini Homesteaders miss out this season so we have decided to run this popular workshop again, book in quick as these sell out quick.

Just some Thursday cuteness for you! Who here remembers little Jane? She came everywhere with us......even to the wakepark! 😂

Our UPDATED Events Calendar :)

Workshop date released! Come along and learn how to grown and harvest your own delicious chicken! Once you try this meat you will never want the supermarket option again.

Winter Feast is on in the backyard of Third Ground this Saturday 6 pm. As always this is a great time to catch up with friends and family! Bring a dish of food to share and your favourite drink! See you all there.

Friday Funnies
I do this when I'm mulching around the farm or carrying groceries into the house 🤣

Want to know what is going on here?! You’ll have to come to the cheese workshop to find out 😆 on this Sunday! Last chance as we won’t run this one again for a while.

Such a wonderful addition to Sarina! Come along and see what it is all about!

Look, all I'm saying is that it's easy for things to get out of hand when you have some land 😂

We had such a great time with Phyllis on Saturday that we have decided to squeeze another one in next SUNDAY! Also great for those who weren't able to make the Saturday time slot.
Get in quick, tickets sell fast :)

Would you?! 😂

There is a LOT of poop....just saying!

We had a wonderful day with Phyllis learning all about cheese making. Thank you everyone for coming out it was so great hearing all your different questions and learning together all about this wonderful craft!

You can't knock his creativity! What's the craziest thing you have knocked together? If you are game, post a photo in the comments.....

Do we have any other ‘Little House’ fans here? I (Sheree) have read all 9 books and watched many episodes and movies with the kids, although I am yet to read this gem! Would love to get my hands on it 🍞

Mini Homesteaders!
We had a wonderful day at ‘Elon Hill’ (Alexes’ farm), learning all about farm animals. The kids got to have a hands on experience feeding and getting up close to the goats, sheep, chickens and turkeys. And then we had a beautiful morning tea and chatted afterwards. Thank so much to everyone who came out.

Yes! We can make hard cheeses in the tropics without a cheese cave!
For years I (Sheree) thought we just couldn’t make it in our climate. I went along to Phylis’s workshop and was super inspired by her huge stack of hard cheeses. Now I am still very much a novice but am happy to say I am up to my 8th wheel. If you are interested in learning how to make cheese, make sure you book in to our upcoming workshop. It’s such a fun day

I don't know a farmer alive who hasn't used them! what is the best/dodgiest thing you have done with cable ties?
I have built a whole fence around my garden 😂

Don’t forget…

If you really want to do a workshop but don't have the $ straight up, please contact us so we can set up something for you ahead of the workshop. We want to encourage everyone to learn these amazing skills, which will save you money in the long run!

See guys, I’m not the only crazy one!! Local TikTok legend Trav posted this on this Insta and I had to laugh because I told everyone I was going to try this for natural fly prevention at the milking demo! 😆

Last school holidays we held our first 'Mini Homesteaders' workshop and it was an amazing success. We love to interact with the next generations homesteaders so we can install and nurture a love of animals and growing food, something many of us didn't get to experience. So many (not all) of the kids that came don't have a farm so sharing ours is the next best thing, you never know what passion it can spark.
If you and your mini's are looking for a school holiday experience, follow the link to the expression of interest form for our next Mini Homesteader series :)

JULY MINI HOMESTEADERS BUSH SURVIVAL SKILLS CAMP - EXPRESSION OF INTEREST — The Homesteading School This is a great one to plan for the whole family. We are taking expressions of interest so head over to our website to book your spot.

What’s cooking in your kitchen today?! I’ve made some yeast bread for one of my non sourdough loving kids. We aim to please at Freedom Farm 🐝🌻🥰👩‍🌾🐄 🍞
X Sheree

DIY experiment….this is an attempt at a solar brood comb extraction (who am I kidding, I’m not sure that’s what it’s even called! 😂 )
Point is….we all start somewhere, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Font be afraid to fail, all the best people have!

Ahh, a job well done, we love what we do!! This is after our last ‘Mini Homesteaders’ workshop, sometimes it’s a lot of organising and setting up but if these are the smiles we have on our faces after ‘work’ then I think we should keep doing it!!

You have all been asking so here it is! I (Sheree) have done this course with Phyllis and she is a wonderful wealth of knowledge, her easy going workshop held right in the middle of her kitchen (you have to see it, talk about kitchen envy!) she will have you confident to try your own cheeses at home by the end of the day.
Spots will fill quick for this one, as we are limited to 10 ppl so get in!

Hey Everyone, we have a great permaforce coming up this May at Wazza's place. Some of you may know him from the Sarina markets where he often has his fruit trees available for sale. This is our chance to say thank you to him for giving us such amazing locally adapted and hardy fruit trees and for sharing his wealth of knowledge.
