While our K-2 students were enjoying a day out at Little Sprouts, our senior Aboriginal students enjoyed having Uncle Richie (Budbudda Dreaming) all to themselves.. and the sound of the didgeridoo in the school yard on a Friday afternoon brings a wonderful sense of peace leading into the weekend.. Today was a special day at SHPS as we celebrated Book Week! The day started with our awards assembly, where students were recognised for their hard work over the last two weeks. Then the fun began with our Book Character Parade—students and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters and showed off their costumes to the many family members in attendance. Every student received free books from our Books in Homes program, and it was wonderful to see how happy they were to receive their new books to take home. We finished the morning by rotating around book activities which celebrated some of the amazing shortlisted books from the Childrens Book Council of Australia's Book of the Year Awards. It's days like today that remind us how important it is to celebrate achievements and encourage a love of reading at school.

🌟 Celebrating Science Week! 🌟

Our students had a blast exploring the wonders of science last week with three exciting activities: investigating forces and inertia, creating moving colours with water, and discovering the secrets of invisible ink using lemon juice and heat. It was fantastic to see curiosity, creativity, and collaboration shine in every rotation! Science really does make learning come alive! 🔬💧🍋

SHPS Term 3 Sustainability Groups were full steam ahead last week…. Students had so much fun harvesting honey, cooking and gardening. Mrs B’s cooking group usually starts with a visit to the garden to see what they can use to cook something amazing… They found some fresh parsley, some sneaky tomatoes and spinach, and included them in a delicious beetroot and pumpkin pasta dish. They topped it off with some Italian Pangrattato (fried breadcrumbs with parsley and parmesan) Yummo!
The garden group spent the afternoon weeding and preparing our garden beds for our new spring planting very soon. We also had some taste tests of our snow peas, celery and spring onions! Spring onions, beetroot, cauliflower and broccoli is all ready to be picked in the community garden, which is very exciting! We also have lettuce and spinach in our inside garden, which we can share with the community as well.

On Friday SHPS students joined students from Muswellbrook High School and Aberdeen Public School to participate in the 2026 STEM Indigenous Masterclass, offered to us by Muswellbrook Shire Council at the STEM Innovation Lab in Muswellbrook. Students loved listening to guest speaker, Jacob Ellis, from Biliirr Collective, who shared his stories, insights and Aboriginal knowledge of environmental science through a yarn circle, as well as an interactive song and dance workshop. We also experienced two highly engaging and interactive DeadlyScience presentations on Bush Soaps and Fish Traps. Thank you, Mr Judd, and thank you MSC, the presentations (and the food) were amazing!
